VANCOUVER - I went to what I thought was El Furniture Warehouse today – a restaurant & bar on Granville Street, right near Nelson – and was shocked to find that the place got a shiny new owner and a quick face lift. El Furniture turned into the Famous Warehouse.
The interior is still quite similar to its old funky skater/snowboarder vibe, but there was one key difference staring boldly right at me: a big sign announcing all food was only $4.95 all day. Say what? CHEAP food? In an era where we’ve got a grin ear to ear over ‘reasonably priced’ edibles - which usually dips into your pocket at an $8 minimum for anything decent - there’s actually a place that dared to dream?
Admittedly my eyebrow raised high as I scanned through the menu filled with classic pub food items, and I swallowed down a healthy dose of skepticism. There it was; quesadilla’s, burgers, chicken parmigiana and the like, all $4.95. Oh, except the Classic Burger, equipped with your basic lettuce, onions, mustard and mayo trimmings, which was LESS at a scant $3.95.
Okay, I reasoned with myself, this is going to be a patty thinner than a mc-tiny cheeseburger and the fries will be day old hay sticks. But out comes this 8oz tasty burger on a fresh, lightly toasted bun and fresh, crunchy on the outside, soft on the inside fries. So, let me go through this here: Taste bud gratifying burger? Check. Great fries? Check. A proper sized plate of onion rings? Check. And, most importantly, beer? Yes, a pint at only $5.35. And here's the kicker, it was good. Really good. Huh, well fancy that. They kicked my skepticism to the curb.
Oh, and did I mention the 0.15 cent Wings on Wednesdays? But with a one drink minimum. Ah HAH! A catch! What a horrible.. terrible… absolutely despicable … oh, who am I kidding; I went there for a drink anyways.
As I chowed down on my food, bopping my head to the funky ska/rock/oldschool mix of music, I thought to myself, Kudu’s to the new owners. They kept the great vibe and the food is cheap and scrumptious. And here I find myself throwing a quiet “screw you” to the HST: it’s still affordable!
This fantastic place to go and have a drink and a bite to eat with friends just got even better.
