PLAYA DEL CARMEN - The northern section of Playa’s Fifth Avenue is often referred to as Little Italy. Full of cafes and restaurants that serve Italian food, wine, and desserts, it’s the equivalent of Boston’s North End or San Francisco’s North Beach. Having visited some of the most impressive vineyards and hill towns in Italy, I can easily appreciate the excellent food. I’ve also been fortunate enough to eat at most of the restaurants in our North End, and I can definitely say that ComoComo is now my favorite. The creation of Stefano Dal Ben and his business partner, Giovanni De Carlo, ComoComo is inviting, impeccably designed, and simply delicious. On any given night, both partners are in the restaurant hosting friends and visitors in a style that’s completely Italian. They’ll put several tables together to host a large group, but you can also have a very intimate dinner without interruptions. Since he's lived and worked in Playa for many years, Stefano was able to hire some of the most professional and personable wait staff I’ve met in Mexico. They’re quick to say that they love working with him, and if you show up early you’ll see them preparing the tables with incredible precision and care. Anyone who loves restaurants and food will be very impressed with the level of service. The food at ComoComo is excellent. More importantly, the prices are accessible to everyone. They specialize in hand-made pastas and fresh seafood dishes. From tasty gazpacho to a goat cheese salad, or mixed fried fish, the food at ComoComo reminds me of my favorite San Francisco chef, Lauren Kiino. I’m a little concerned that they’ll get tired of my requests for the Tagliolini with basil pesto and green beans, but it’s a risk I’m willing to take. In addition to the delicious food selections, the restaurant has developed a very elegant and diverse wine list, with Italian varietals that perfectly complement the pastas and seafood dishes. The desserts are prepared with equal care and are all beautifully presented. My favorite, the chocolate fondant with hazelnut ice cream is prepared with a rich Belgium chocolate and subtle olive oil and salt flour accents. Visitors in Playa simply must eat at ComoComo. This restaurant reflects that best of who we are: a community of individuals who’ve arrived from different countries with very diverse stories and talents.
