BARBADOS - Cooking is like love. It should be entered into with abandon or not at all. - Harriet Van Horne
Cafe Moya on the West Coast of Barbados is the unequivocal choice for eats, treats and excellent customer service. This homey establishment is the ideal spot for breakfast (I highly recommend the Moya Island Breakfast – 2 eggs, plantain, baked beans, sausages and toast), a cup of coffee with a friend, or to indulge your sweet tooth with an ice-cream topped crepe (they taste as incredible as they look!).
Set up by Marguerite Moe four and a half years ago, Cafe Moya has built a name for itself primarily via word of mouth. Anyone who meets Marguerite is immediately struck by her charming smile and her enthusiasm and passion for cooking. She beams with excitement as she explains that she wanted to create a place that was friendly, personable and known for consistency and great food. She has succeeded at doing this and more. Brightly decorated in vibrant orange and lime green, Cafe Moya invites you in for a taste and you find yourself coming back time and time again. Visitors are greeted like family and one of the managers has even been known to take newcomers to the island on guided tours! Many of the patrons are locals and returning visitors to Barbados who have fallen under the spell of Marguerite and her lovely staff and made Cafe Moya one of the places to be on the West Coast.
Everything on the menu has been created and perfected by Marguerite herself. The salads are topped with homemade dressings and the delicious paninis are made with herb focaccia bread baked by Mrs. Moe daily. There is nothing like freshly made bread and Marguerite’s breads rival the best! Even the pita bread is made in house and the Moya chicken salad pita is in great demand (imagine chicken salad in tangy yoghurt sauce wixed with kuchela, chopped grapes, lettuce and tomato – YUM!). There are also several vegetarian options including, falafel (and for those of you who are asking, the chickpeas are ground by Marguerite and her staff) and the most delectable eggplant combinations.
After stuffing yourself with breakfast AND lunch, you better make yourself comfortable for dessert. These options are equally enjoyable: homemade brownies, cookies, ice-cream on a homemade waffle cone or the infamous crepes. These can be washed down with what people have claimed is ‘some of the best coffee on the island’.
And there is more to come (you better make room). Marguerite uses her passion for food to scour the internet for new and innovative recipes. She is constantly introducing new specials as well as perfecting existing menu items. Future plans include flying fish crepes, creole sauce and cinnamon honey butter. “The perfect place to get a treat that is affordable and always tasty,” is Marguerite’s description of Cafe Moya and everyone who visits cannot agree more.
