Club U.N - Montreal

MONTREAL - I don’t usually find myself in the Old Port for my club fix simply because my personal philosophy is that my enjoyment of the night is based on good music, good sound and a good vibe. What this means in practical terms is; is this a place I can dance? Is this a place I’m comfortable entering and mingling in? Too often the Old Port evokes images of useless line-ups, snooty door people and overdressed patrons (clearly, only my own opinion). U.N. is different; it’s a cross-over between people who want the experience of a plush club and then those who enjoy a more underground club experience.

Thursday nights at Club U.N. are PLAY: a fun weekly featuring some of Montreals top Tech djs; Maus and Anton & Jorg. The night was recently started and features a good fusion between the ‘dress to impress’ crowd and the underground club culture. I’ve gone with comfy shoes, felt right at home and danced my way into the night (with the aid of 5$ drink specials, of course).

The club’s sound and visual capacity is one of the best I’ve seen in Montreal. The sound is warm, clear and enveloping without being too damaging to your eardrums. The visuals paint the ceilings and all 12 speakers. When the vibe heats up, the ceilings transform into a burning red-orange swirl, which takes the expression “the roof is on fire” to another level.

Starting a successful weekly night in Montreal isn’t easy, especially in winter. Everyone adjusts to the cold temperatures by refusing to leave the house unless they really need to! But there’s nothing better to warm your spirits than a Thursday night groove session with some of Montreal’s finest. The dance floor always has a good few people with dance agendas, but hopefully as the night gains popularity the people standing in the back will muster up some courage, put their drinks down and get down.

U.N is at 390 Notre-Dame West, Montreal.
