BARBADOS - "It is beauty that captures your attention; personality which captures your heart." This quote is epitomized by cool kid, Sarah Bayne, fashionista extraordinaire!
Plumtree Jewellery Designs, based in Barbados, is the brainchild of the utterly charming Sarah Bayne. This gregarious young woman has tackled the fashion industry and made her mark, capturing the interest of locals, tourist and even celebrities (Recording artist, Joss Stone, has bought some of Sarah’s designs)!
From as young as 12 years old, Sarah has enjoyed working with various materials to make jewellery. Starting with macramé, she then progressed to all types of beads and baubles. As she got better and with the continuous encouragement of her family, Sarah then began to have small sales at home. These proved to be extremely popular and Sarah soon began offering her products at other locations, including the Barbados Yacht Club.
It was at this point that Plumtree really began to take shape. Sarah’s sister bought her a book on jewellery making and the rest, as they say, is history. People started ordering for custom gifts, special occasions and just because. One of the island’s leading boutiques for beachwear approached Sarah about stocking Plumtree and a partnership was formed. Soon, other stores were carrying the designs and word was spreading fast.
It was at this point that Sarah made a stunning custom piece that was bought by her neighbour. At a party, this distinctive item was admired by the owner of one of the island’s top boutiques who subsequently contacted Sarah and started carrying the Plumtree line.
Although this is primarily a hobby for Sarah, Plumtree has secured a strong following and continues to win admirers. Sarah can be found at many of the seasonal craft fairs across the island and is also available for weddings and special events.
