PLAYA DEL CARMEN - My closest friends in San Francisco are all involved in the culinary industry, and over the course of a three year period, each of us independently visited Rome. We shared long lists of sites to visit, and, more importantly, places to eat. The longest part of the list was always the gelaterias, shops that serve up gelato, which is Italy's own uniquely delicious form of ice cream. Playa Del Carmen is full of Italian expats, so it's fair to assume that gelato would become an important part of the scene here. Corsi, on the corner of 28th and 5th, has always been my favorite ice cream place, and the fact that it outlived several local competitors on the same block is evidence of the great gelato, coffee, and service. What I love about Corsi is that they serve the gelato in a traditional Italian form, so it's beautiful display of colors, flavors, and texture. The gelato is all hand made, and the shop also serves sorbets and paletas (popcicles) made of fresh fruits like lemon, strawberry, mango and blackberry. You can taste all of the traditional italian flavors before choosing your favorite, so I often hear returning customers talking about the flavor they had the day before. You can swing by Corsi for morning coffee or after a trip to the beach at Mamitas. It's also directly around the corner from well-loved restaurants like El Diez, El Carnicero, and Babes, so it's a perfect spot for a great desert. If you're like me, you'll buy your favorite flavor by the half pound, which they pack into a insulated box, so you can take it home and impress your dinner guests. Corsi doesn't have an online contact, but they are clearly marked by a neon ice cream cone right at the corner of 5th Avenue and 28th Street. |
