PLAYA DEL CARMEN - El Taj, located directly on the beach between 10th and 12th Streets, is one of Playa’s newer condo hotels, and it stands out for a variety of reasons. First, it’s located on a very popular area of the downtown beach, near many well-known destinations like the Blue Parrot and Diablito Cha Cha Cha. There’s also easy access to some of Playa’s best diving right off the beach, through dive shops like Phantom Divers, on First Avenue. El Taj is also unique to Playa because of its design and décor. It's constructed in a more traditional style than some of the newer buildings in Playa, and it's finished with gorgeous Southeast Asian and Balinese accents. The entryways are constructed from beautiful hand-carved woods, and the ceilings and floors are carefully installed to replicate a tropical bungalow with designer finishes. The feeling is one of open air, natural luxury that immediately allows you to relax. In this sense, El Taj is what many consider Playa sheik at its best. The condos at El Taj are of various sizes, and the prices vary by season and the length of stay. Since this is a condo hotel, there is twenty-four hour concierge and security service available to make sure your stay is seamless. The benefit of staying here is that you can also have kitchen facilities and groups can stay in parties, so it is much more inviting that many local hotels. Another main perk at the Taj is that Indigo Beach Club and Restaurant is located in the building on the beach side. The food at Indigo Beach is excellent, and it’s easy to spend hours there over breakfast. This restaurant is a top choice for many of my male friends because the delicious entrees, excellent service, and romantic ambience make it a perfect place for a special date. And my friends date a lot. To me, El Taj is a great choice for families or groups of friends who are planning a special trip or event. It's centrally located, beautifully designed, and the service is excellent. It’s also a nice choice for divers who like to relax, eat, and sleep well after a long series of dives. The services here make a vacation much more simple than a basic condo, so if you're coming for a wedding or celebration, you have an attentive front desk staff who will provide you with everything from towels to band aids, and you can relax with family and friends. Since some seasons can be fairly crowded you should be aware that the beach can fill up quickly, but that's the case with most of downtown Playa. I will note, however, that the stretch of beach at El Taj is on the south side of a bight, so gas from the fishing boats and seaweed can accumulate there. It's a beautiful view, and you can use the pool facilities, but it isn't the best location for swimming.
