Hotel La Tortuga, Playa Del Carmen, Mexico

PLAYA DEL CARMEN - Hotel La Tortuga is an institution in Playa Del Carmen. They opened as a four-room bed and breakfast almost fourteen years ago, and they've evolved, modified, and expanded their concept to encompass a small part of the corner at Tenth Street at Tenth Avenue in Playa.

I’ll start by admitting that this article will seem biased. First, I prefer small hotels -- the intimate spots in the center of a city will always catch my eye. I also love Playa’s local culture and the remaining pieces of our natural environment -- like water, trees, and local animals -- that we've left untouched. That said, Hotel Tortuga is doing something unique because they have accommodations and services that reflect our local vibe, while also providing a huge dose of luxury treatment.

The hotel itself is centered on a large courtyard. The building was constructed in phases, so their pool was also expanded over time, and the result is a variety of winding stream-like sections, connected by some larger bathing areas. Stone and hardwood walkways have been installed, creating an incredible Zen garden effect. The old-growth trees, resident birds, and tropical plants also enjoy a perfectly maintained sanctuary that could only exist in Playa del Carmen.

The rooms at Hotel La Tortuga are extremely simple and beautiful, with hardwood furnishings, onyx lighting, natural color schemes, and gorgeous, expansive bathrooms. Some spaces feel more like a bungalow or house because they're larger, with Jacuzzi tubs, and private decks or gardens. The spaces are extremely quiet and private, which is noteworthy considering that the hotel is situated on one of the busier streets in Playa.

The bar and lounge area inside of La Tortuga is like an oversized living room. There are a variety of beautiful seating areas for reading and socializing, and there’s also a pool table. The bar is small, low-key, and reserved for guests, serving excellent drinks in an atmosphere that Frank Llyod Wright must have influenced. The setting here is friendly, and conducive to good conversation over a relaxed cocktail hour, so you can chat with other travelers and get to know the staff.

It’s difficult to capture the ambiance of La Tortuga in words. The staff is incredibly attentive and kind. There’s sincere warmth that makes the hotel and restaurant feel like someone’s home, and it’s obvious that the employees enjoy their work. This impeccable service can be credited to the hotel’s manager, Benjamin Fernandez, who was trained at the Ritz Carleton, and has been supervising the team for the past six years. Perfectionist, energetic and very thoughtful, Benjamin has overseen the expansion of the hotel’s facilities, restaurant services, and bar and wine programs, and he is obviously schooling his staff in high standards and thoughtful service.

Hotel Tortuga is understated luxury at its best. Much like their neighbor, Hotel Playa del Karma, there’s a magical feel to the interior spaces after the sun goes down - - when they light torches and candles, but La Tortuga is Playa's off-the-map version of those luxury hotels that have been repeated, overdone, and over-marketed. It’s an adult place for friends who want to enjoy a break or for couples who want to relax and explore. The location is within a short walk of both 5th Avenue and beautiful beach clubs, but its also removed enough to still have the feel of old Playa, with trees, plants, and open spaces. If you’re searching for a high quality hotel with local character, and a touch of five-star service, Hotel Tortuga is, hands-down, my new favorite spot.

You can contact the hotel on their website , where you can also view more about their restaurant and spa services on the hotel's Facebook page.
