Discordia: Tattoos and Art. Playa Del Carmen, Mexico

PLAYA DEL CARMEN - Keeping with tradition, we have another artistic neighbor in La Nueva Quinta. I know, I know.... I write a lot about this small area, but if you live in Playa, and you’re independent and community-minded you’ll probably find your greatest treasures in the four-block radius surrounding 38th Street along 5th Avenue.

Discordia is a new shop at 40th street, between 5th and 10th. They specialize in tattoos, body paint, and other modifications, but they also have a gallery of original artisan pieces, clothes, bags, and prints that are all independently produced.

Located in a lovingly restore corner spot, Discordia created a bi-level boutique, studio and gallery, featuring, artists from Cancun, Playa, and Tulum. They have drawings, paintings, and sculptures that speak to our eclectic mix of Mexican traditions and Caribbean beaches.

As you enter the shop you’ll notice Adam and Eve on either side of a very large, old growth tree – the first hint that this team knows how to play with ideas, art, and images.

Discorida offers tattoos, and they’re serious about their art. Their tattoo work is incredibly unique and beautifully detailed. More importantly, they create a space that serves a larger art community, and in this way, they create the true feel of a grassroots organization.

If you’re in Playa and you’ve been thinking about a tattoo or piercing this is the place to go. This isn’t a shop for impulsive decisions – this is the place where you can plan and execute the piece you’ve had in the back of your mind. So even though I’m not tattooed and don’t plan to be, I quickly felt welcome here. That’s their point, and they’re executing the concept perfectly.

You can visit Discordia on Facebook for more information about events and appointments.
