PLAYA DEL CARMEN - I finally found a hostel I really like here in Playa del Carmen, which means we have a nicely priced spot for backpackers and budget travelers. Vive la Vida opened in January 2011, and is headed by Fernando Lara and a select team of longtime Playa residents. From the entrance to the common spaces, and the dorm rooms, this place emits a calm, clean, and thoughtful vibe. The hostel is housed in a brand new spot, on 2nd Street, between 25th and 30th Avenues. The facilities are clean, bright, and well maintained, and the location is well located but also quiet. The hostel is directly up the block from both the collectiivo (van) stop and the ADO terminal, so guests can catch local and long-distance transit very easily. Guests at Vive la Vida can take advantage of excellent pricing and very complete services. The rooms range between $150 MX - 350MX, depending on whether you have a dorm room or a private space with a bathroom. The design is flexible, so with advanced reservations, mixed gender friends can reserve private spaces and split the cost. Dorm rooms for females and males are also available, and if you're traveling alone or with a friend you'll probably choose a bed in the dorm. Vive la Vida is very simple with few frills, but what they offer is very solidly designed and well--planned. They have a full kitchen, so visitors can buy food and cook, and these facilities are extremely clean and well stocked. The common area has a small pool where guests can socialize and cool off, and beds are simple, economical, secure, and very safe. They also have small luxuries, like reading lights by the beds, and very clean lockers to secure your belongings When you arrive at Vive la Vida you'll receive a bedding and some soap for the showers. You can also access wifi and relax in the common spaces or rent a bicycle and check out a little bit of Playa. The bikes here are rented at 20 MX for three hours, or 50 MX for the day. The management also offer exclusive bike and snorkeling yours outings, giving you the option of a very personalized outing in and around Playa. Vive la Vida also offers unbeatable service and a well-managed space, from residents who have lived in Playa for years. The front desk is headed by true Playenses who know the community and also understand hostel design and management, so rules like quiet hours and cleanliness are strict. They also provide extra information about Playa, and they'll also connect you to a number of wonderful hostels in other areas of Mexico. |
