PLAYA DEL CARMEN - I only recently discovered Beach Club at Grand Coral, but locals have known about it for a few years, since it was opened under the name Blue Cacao. This club is located just around the tip of Coco Bay, about thirty minutes walking distance from the beach at 38th Street. It's positioned on a quieter, less developed bay, and the beach to the north and south is open, expansive, and free of people.
The club itself is a fairly large building with restaurant and bar space, centered on a nicely-sized infinity pool. The pool deck is filled with sun beds and lounge furnishings, and the restaurant offers tables for both large and small groups. The decor here is minimalist and very relaxing, allowing you to sit back and enjoy a gorgeous view of the ocean, punctuated by several perfectly placed palm trees.
This spot has quickly become my favorite new place for long, luxurious beach days because it is less heavily frequented that clubs in downtown Playa. The music here is played a little lower, the setting is focused on comfort rather than volume, and sun bathing couples mingle seamlessly with children and their parents.
The food at Beach Club, Grand Coral is also excellent. Their shrimp and fish tacos are juicy, perfectly flavored and surprisingly filling, and the fish and chips are amazingly light, crispy and decadent. You can choose from other local favorites such as a variety of ceviches or opt for traditional bar fare such as hamburgers or nachos. It is all thoughtfully prepared and really great value for the quality.
If you're in Playa for a few days and want to get away to a more secluded spot, the Beach Club, Grand Coral is often very quiet on weekdays. You will get excellent service, and probably be sharing the pool and beach with just a handful of visitors. Its a bit more crowded on weekends, as its become a favorite spot for local kiteboarders and their families, but the groups all tend to be very low key, so you can take a short escape from the downtown fashion and party scene.
Beach Club at Grand Coral can be reached on foot by walking north along the beach. You can also arrive by car or taxi by going north to the entrance to the Grand Coral hotel, and following the signs. The property is open to all visitors, and I have never been told that there is a minimum purchase for use of the facilities. If I go with one or two friends we typically spend about $30 USD for a full day of snacks and drinks. If you tend to enjoy cocktails or beer at the beach your bill may be a bit higher, but the setting is worth the extra expense.
Arrive early for a preferred spot on a pool-side bed or beachfront lounge chair. If your traveling with a large group this is the perfect spot for a afternoon lunch because you can linger for hours and there's options for both sun and shade. Beach Club also rents the facilities for events such as weddings birthdays, and baby showers, and it would be my top choice for a sophisticated and stunning event venue.
