The Savannah Hotel

Christ Church | $$$$

The Savannah hotel is a stone’s throw away from the historic Garrison Savannah, home to the Barbados Museum, horse racing and George Washington House. The hotel is a mix of old and new. The older part of the hotel was an old plantation house constructed in the 1700s. The newer, more modern part of the hotel was constructed in 2001.

The Savannah has a distinctively colonial feel in keeping with its historic past. The reception and bedrooms are all decorated in a relaxed but elegant colonial style with dark wooden furniture which is complimented by a crisp white interior. There are 4 types of rooms: superior, deluxe, deluxe pool view suites and deluxe beachfront suites. All of the rooms have balconies with the exception of the superior rooms. Central to the hotel is a swimming pool. It traverses the length of the modern part of the hotel and guests staying in rooms that overlook the pool can step out of their rooms straight into it for a refreshing dip.

The hotel has two restaurants, The Boucan Wine Bar and Restaurant which serves international cuisine and the more relaxed Beach Bar and Grill. The Savannah caters for business travellers and has conference facilities that can accommodate between 10 and 200 attendees and there are also gym and spa facilities that guests can utilise. The Savannah provides old-style charm and elegance to guests.

Caters to business travellers, families and 30-something couples.

Although The Savannah is centrally located in a relatively bustling area, the atmosphere is one of relaxed elegance. The long pool, which is the focal point of the modern part of the hotel, is criss-crossed by bridges and sandwiched between the hotel rooms. Although the hotel is relatively large when I visited in early 2009 (without an overnight stay) it felt private and secluded.

The hotel is a beachfront property but since the beach has been designated as a turtle nesting site, water sports are not permitted. The beach offers guests a welcome break from the busier south coast beaches and is a great place to watch the sun set. The Boucan Restaurant is open to guests and the public and serves international cuisine; their Bajan Sunday brunch is rumoured to be one of best on the island!

The Savannah caters to business travellers, families and 30-something couples, it’s easy to see why. With its combination of tasteful grown up décor and it’s proximity to Bridgetown and the lively south coast it’s no wonder that The Savannah is so popular.
