Scarlet

St. James | $$

Scarlet is a trendy little cocktail bar and bistro that really is Scarlet by name and nature. The bright red chattel house is in Paynes Bay, St James on the stylish West Coast of Barbados and is not difficult to miss! Historically, chattel houses were the homes of plantation workers but when you walk into Scarlet, you could be in a chic bar in a big city, not a relaxed island paradise. The interior of Scarlet consists of a single room and is painted a vibrant red colour with the exception of the Andy Warhol prints of Marilyn Monroe and Jackie-O. The furniture is black and the chairs all have a large martini glass on the back of the seat which pays homage to their cocktails. The piece de resistance is the large kitsch disco ball in the centre of the room.

Scarlet’s Hunger menu consists of a mixture of Bajan dishes with a twist and comfort food. One of the more popular main courses is Miss Francis’ Fish Pie, but there are a number of dishes to choose from. Alternatively, people are positively encouraged to sit at the bar, enjoy a few cocktails from their Thirst Menu and indulge in some of their delicious appetisers. Regardless, Scarlet prides itself on good service, good value and a lively atmosphere.

Scarlet - good spot for the trendy traveler

I’ve been to Scarlet once and enjoyed my experience there. When we first pulled up in our taxi I thought man, no windows, this place seems sketchy but the moment you walk in you begin to appreciate this trendy little restaurant.

The sushi entree was good, they played relaxing music and the dim lighting made for a romantic evening (I was with my lady at that time). The drinks came out quickly and were well presented. Scarlet was one of the few restaurants that stood out in my mind, everything just seemed to work well and I just couldn’t believe that I had driven by this place a million times and didn’t think about trying it out for dinner…..I’m glad I did.

Scarlet...Good Times

I went to Scarlet after hearing that it had a great value for the food and an even better selection of cocktails. Well the selection of cocktails was very unique, they had a special cocktail of the day. you can get some quite interesting tastes that you would never have though of creating yourself. As for the food, it really is a bang for the buck. If you like quality food then I highly recommend this place.

And the background tunes are great. i almost went back with my laptop to ask them to transfer their whole collection.

Fun Times

I’ve been to Scarlet many times and have never had a bad meal or terrible service. This place is always buzzing and if you walk in without a reservation the helpful staff will accommodate you at the bar with finesse. The owners are hands on behind the bar and the floor to provide the utmost in customer connection. This restaurant is so funky, there are Andy Warhol paintings on the walls and martini shaped chairs for your comfort. Enjoy!

A lively bistro and cocktail bar.

Scarlet is a lively bistro and cocktail bar that did not fail to impress. The bar is entirely air conditioned so probably not a good choice if you want an alfresco meal. However, the staff are friendly and accommodating so it’s a great choice for a decently priced meal in trendy surrounds. I booked a late table for four at 9.30 and unfortunately the previous table hadn’t yet finished their meal. There were seats available at the bar so we got tucked in and enjoyed our delicious food. My only comments would be that although the appetisers are very tasty, they’re somewhat on the small side and there aren’t that many dishes for vegetarians!

If you just want to pop in for a cocktail I’d highly recommend their signature drink, the Scarlet Rocks.
