Zen

St Philip | $$$$$ | Website

Zen offers delicious Japanese and Thai cuisine in a magnificent oceanfront setting. Zen is located at the historic Crane Hotel which was built in 1887 and is the oldest in Barbados. The glass frontage of the restaurant affords a spectacular view of the Crane, famed as one of the island’s most beautiful beaches. The 12 person sushi bar is the heart of the restaurant where you can watch the sushi chefs work whilst you enjoy the view. There is also an authentic Tatami room which caters for private parties and allows you to dine in privacy.

The extensive menu offers a wide variety of Japanese and Thai dishes. There is also a good wine selection offering new and old world wines. The restaurant prides itself on preparing fresh delicious food.

For the Sushi Lover in You

This restaurant is definitely a favourite with locals and tourists. From the minute you open the door, you step into an authentic Japanese setting. The waitresses are even dressed in kimonos! Being as popular as it is, service at times can be slow but the food is well worth it – highly recommend the Chirashi (a varied selection of sushi). There are several semi-enclosed private tables running along one side of the restaurant – these are quite nice especially for an intimate dinner or special occasion. However, for a ‘take your breath away’ kind of view, secure a table by the floor length glass windows overlooking Crane Beach. This restaurant is pricey but the experience brings me back again and again.

The Best Sushi

Had dinner at Zen when they first opened and was impressed from the moment I walked through the door. The waitresses are dressed in traditional Japanese wear and welcome you with a smile. The menu is so wide I couldn’t make up my mind but by the end of the evening left with a taste will forever be etched on my taste buds.

The view at Zen is breathtaking as is the food.

The view at Zen is breathtaking as is the food. I stuck to the Japanese menu; the food was beautifully prepared and presented and utterly delicious. Zen’s downfall is its slow service. After I was seated, my waiter took a drinks order which took 40 minutes to arrive despite the fact that the restaurant was half full. My party ended up having to pour our own wine which is something that I would overlook were the prices cheaper. Zen aims to give brilliant service and fails to deliver. However, the overall experience was a good one and I’d recommend it if you love sushi and you’re a patient person.
