Crane Beach

In the 18th century the Crane beach was home to a large crane that was used to load and unload ships, hence the name! The Crane is an absolutely spectacular beach with powdery white sand and crystal clear water on the southeast coast. It’s also home to the island’s oldest hotel, the Crane Hotel which dates back to 1887. The Telegraph, a UK newspaper has named it one of the best beaches on the island.
Like all beaches in Barbados, the Crane is a public beach. Access can be gained via the public access footpath on it’s eastern boundary. To get on to the beach itself you’ve got to walk down a steep hill and then a series of round footsteps which have been secured on to the rock wall with cement. Alternatively, if you go to one of The Crane Hotel’s restaurants for lunch, you can gain access to western side of the beach down the wooden staircase.
The Crane is lined with coconut trees and is a good spot for body boarding and body surfing. There are beach chairs available for hire as well as soft drinks, beer and body boards.

Big Waves
Crane Beach had HUGE waves when I was there (mid-March), and there was about a 1-foot drop from the beach to the water, cause the tide was high. Still a cool beach to go to as it’s very private and sometimes you can find some topless women :)
There’s a cool cliff jump you can do, but I would be careful if the waves are high and strong. Nice to check out for a day-trip.

Another one of the island’s fabulous beaches.
Crane beach is just another one of the island’s fabulous beaches. I’d highly recommend a visit. It’s always a bit quieter mid-week as it’s popular with locals and visitors although generally speaking it’s big enough that you never feel crowded even when it’s busy. Like most of the beaches in Barbados, the size of the Crane can vary. Certain weather conditions can cause excess sand to collect at the beach which can lead to it being wider than at other times. I’ve been to the Crane when there has been little or no beach but this doesn’t last for long and it is pretty unusual.
I’ve got so many lovely memories of long, lazy summer days spent at the Crane body surfing and then taking it easy on the beach, enjoying the sunshine and the delicious breeze. My only other piece of advice is to be careful on the public access footsteps. In my experience they can be very slippery when wet!
