Horse Racing at The Garrison Savannah

Bridgetown | $ | Website

The Garrison Savannah, approximately two miles outside of Bridgetown, is the only race track in Barbados. The Garrison Savannah has been the home of horseracing since 1845 when the officers of the British Regiment used what was at that time the parade ground for racing their horses. In 1905, the Barbados Turf Club was formed in order to organise and regulate horse racing in the island.

There are three seasons of racing at the Garrison Savannah which run from January to April, May to August and October to December. The oval track is six furlongs long and races are run at distances of 5, 5.5, 7.8, 9 and 10 furlongs.

Visitors can watch races in the Grandstand, Field Stand, Sir John Chandler Stand, Owners and Trainers Bar or the Corporate Boxes and the entry fee varies according to where you sit. In addition, there are pari-mutuel windows where bets can be placed.

...there’s nothing like the anticipation of waiting for the race to start

A day of racing at the Garrison Savannah is a great fun for everyone. The track comes alive, there are people everywhere placing bets, watching the horses egging them on whilst they gallop round the track fighting for first place. The most prestigious day of racing is the Sandy Lane Gold Cup which is held on the first Saturday of March.

I always enjoy a day at the Garrison. There’s nothing I like more than a flutter although I always manage to back losers! I tend to sit in the Grand Stand but have been lucky enough to sit in a Corporate Box a few times which has a fabulous view of paddock bend. The best thing about placing a bet at the track is that the minimum bet you can place is $1 which means that I can limit my losses. Once I’ve put my money down there’s nothing like the anticipation of waiting for the race to start and then cheering your horse on like there’s no tomorrow. Before you know it, it’s all over and most of the time I’m left out of pocket. I managed to lose all of my money when I went to the Sandy Lane Gold Cup but I certainly had a blast in the process!
