Oistins Fish Fry

Christ Church | $

Oistins Fish Market is a small, energetic market that’s open 7 days a week. Every Friday night, visitors and locals head to Oistins for the popular fish fry where you can sample freshly caught and cooked fish and rum served in the traditional Bajan way - by the bottle! You’re spoilt for choice with numerous vendors and types of fish to choose from. Better still, the food is incredibly cheap at around $20 Bds per plate.

Once you finish your meal you can have a boogie – at one end of the fish fry there’s music for the older generation and at the other end, there’s a selection of more modern music ranging from disco, to reggae to hip hop.

A Diamond in the Rough

Having lived in the UK for a period of time, it amazed me how many people there spoke about Oistins as soon as Barbados was mentioned. Don’t go looking for luxury – but be prepared for the Best fish on the island!!! Grilled right in front of you, you have your choice of some local sides, including macaroni pie and grilled potatoes. Grab a bench and soak in the loud combination of music and loud conversation. Remember: Friday night is the night!!! Get there early or grab a drink and be prepared for a long wait.

A Must

I’ve only been to Barbados twice in my life, and during my second visit I managed to make it out to Oistins Fish Fry. I highly recommend any traveler to come here because the food is AMAZING! I’m not a big fan of fish, but I had Marlin with rice and some veggies and it was one of the best fish dishes I’ve ever had! It tasted more like steak than fish :)

Price wise it’s not too bad, I wouldn’t say it’s super expensive but it’s average. Great atmosphere, good food, good times :)

Oistins is a real taste of Bajan culture.

Oistins is a real taste of Bajan culture. There’s a relatively large selection of fish to choose from marlin, flying fish, kingfish, tuna and dolphin (otherwise known as mahi mahi, not flipper!) to name a few, which you can have fried or grilled. The fish is generally accompanied by traditional Bajan side dishes: coleslaw, salad, macaroni pie and rice and peas. For those who don’t like fish, there’s pork and chicken which is either deep fried or grilled.

More than anything, go for the atmosphere, Bajan’s love to party and boy do they know how. The rum flows and the music is pumping. The sound systems blare an eclectic mix of music and you can hear anything from ballroom to seventies disco to reggae and modern hip hop. Be warned, Oistins has been described as a “no frills” experience so if frills are your thing then the fish fry isn’t for you.
