My ReviewsLate night treatFor those in Halifax, El Fogon is Playa del Carmen’s equivalent of Pizza Corner. Well, it was for me anyway. After a good night of partying, get your taxi driver to stop here for some great authentic Mexican food. It’s always a good sign when you have a mix of locals, ex-pats and tourists all in the same place. The reason is simple: the food is awesome. And it’s cheap too. I have been to El Fogon five or six times during three trips to Playa. I would go through the menu item by item but, truth be told, I don’t remember the names of all of the things I have eaten there and, truth be told, I may have been a wee bit intoxicated…each time. Depends what you're looking for...Mexico. Dance floor on the beach. Cheap drinks. Sounds good to me. I travelled to Playa del Carmen with my rugby team last November and the Blue Parrot was one of our favourite places to go. Yes, Jazz, many of us were trying to pick up. It’s just a great place to party. If you’re looking for a place to chill out, this isn’t the spot. If you want good music in a great location where just about anything goes, this is the place for you. SexinessAtmosphereExcitementValueService

CommentsNostalgiaI am a fan of Gibby’s. It was one of the first “fancy” restaurants my parents took my sister and I too when we were kids. I’m talking like 25 years ago. The food may not be spectacular, but it is very good, if not a little overpriced. The atmosphere is excellent, with the old building and servers who have seemingly worked there since the turn of the century (the 20th century). Gibby’s hasn’t changed much since I first went there in the 1980s, and I suspect long before then. Back then it was the place to be, but with all of the new restaurants and what seems to be a food revolution in Montreal, it is probably a little behind the times. But it will always have a special place in my heart and will remain one of my “go to” places in Montreal. PS If you find Gibby’s to be a bit pricey (which it definitely is), go for lunch. They have a good lunch menu and its far more reasonable. TasteCreativityAtmosphereValueService
