What I remember most is the spa, which was stunning.

I wasn’t sure what to expect with this new hotel, which is kind of in an odd spot in the middle of the business area (though very close to the shopping!). When I visited in November 2008, it was very busy, with cocktails and meetings going on and lots of people in the restaurant. What I remember most is the spa, which was stunning. The rooms were some of the biggest I’ve seen anywhere, if not a bit bland in design and fit with all the bells and whistles. Maybe not the most unique of hotels, but what it does it seems to do very well. I can definitely picture a businessperson on a long-term stay feeling very comfortable at Le Crystal.

.....had me saying "wow"

I’ve seen a lot of hotels in Montreal, and I can’t think of another one that had me saying “wow” around every corner. This hotel is simply beautiful and different from anywhere else I’ve stayed. Rooms aren’t so much rooms as spaces. I loved the way they were kind of empty but still felt cozy, with huge beds and soft carpets. Calm and quiet – it’s somewhere I can picture hiding away for a weekend with my boyfriend. I took a half point off in the amenities category only because the hotel doesn’t provide iPod docks in the rooms (!), but apparently those are on the way. Just go to Gault.

You definitely get a feeling of old worldliness and history

It’s quite a shame that The Queen Elizabeth looks a bit drab and austere from the outside (unlike it’s other Fairmont siblings in Canada, like the Royal York and the Chateau Laurier), because inside the hotel, you definitely get a feeling of old worldliness and history. I visited the hotel in October 2008 during the labor strike, so there wasn’t as much staff as usual, but even then you can tell that it’s a place that prides itself on service. If you’re looking for something young and trendy, bypass the QE. But, in my opinion, it would be great for upscale business types, 35+ leisure travelers and anyone who can appreciate the golden years of the large railway hotel.

The rooms are maybe a bit bigger than average

I visited the Delta Centre-Villa in October ’08. I find it hard to review big hotels, as they all do tend to offer the same checklist of basic amenities and comforts. The Delta Centre-Ville is no exception, though it does benefit from a really great location. Overall, the rooms are maybe a bit bigger than average, with tall windows to let lots of light in. If you are looking for something a bit more trendy here, there are a few really extraordinary suites, one of which (the Regency) must have more square feet than most local homes.

Great location in Old Montreal

The Auberge du Vieux-Port feels a bit like a luxury farmhouse. And I mean that in a good way. I visited the hotel in September, 2008, and remember thinking that it would be great for a honeymoon or romantic getaway. With its antiquey look, I couldn’t necessarily picture a young and super trendy couple wanting to crash here, though just about everyone would appreciate its attentive service. If you want to explore the Old Port and are visiting in the summer, you pretty much can’t beat the location right along the main road parallel to the river.

I loved the look of the big, funky lobby

The word that most comes to mind after my visit to Aloft in November 2008 is simple. But not in a bad way. The idea behind this airport hotel is simple –you check-in, sleep, shower, back to the airport or whatever destination is next on your list. As places to kill time go, though, Aloft is no slouch. I loved the look of the big, funky lobby. It sort of felt like someone’s really cool living room, especially with the pool table. The rooms are small but perfectly adequate, with the same designy feel of the W. All in all, Aloft is definitely a refreshing addition from the boring selection of airport hotels. I’d go back!

Nice in the summer

I’ve eaten at Boris Bistro several times and had drinks on their terrace a few more than that, and it’s definitely the latter where the restaurant offers something different. The food is pretty good, but munching on something out on that terrace feels great in the summertime, especially with pitcher of sangria (I’ve had red and white – both good) sitting in front of you! If you want to go have an icy drink in a cool spot, definitely check it out. For a random dinner indoors, there are other places I’d recommend first.
