My ReviewsOld Montreals famous steak houseEveryone has heard of Gibby’s in Old Montreal. It’s the type of restaurant your Dad introduces you to when you’re old enough to appreciate a good steak. I love the fact that Gibby’s is in an old building, the stone walls really add to the atmosphere. It’s an expensive restaurant and the food didn’t blow me away. Would I come back for a steak, prob not, there’s much better in Montreal. But would I come back and bring a guest from out of the city….ya, probably, just so they can see a little of Old Montreal. On the plus side the service was quick and efficient and they can all pretty much speak English (don’t be shy if you’re a tourist). Lots of history, always busy, older crowd, a restaurant to try once…. TasteCreativityAtmosphereValueService

Something newAfter 8 great months in Playa Del Carmen, Mexico it was time to come back to Montreal. Paul, Nick and I decided to venture out in un-familiar territory, a magical land where people are friendly, attractive and the bars are very chill….yes, this is the Plateau. We showed up at Candi Bar pretty early because we heard this place can get packed. As we walked in the first thing we noticed was the amazing colors, the lighting in this bar is really cool. The second thing I noticed was the cute French bartenders that were very friendly, very bilingual, and very cool to talk to. She handed us our giant lollipop drink menu (very similar to Gogo’s horoscope shot menu) and we made our choices. I went for the man drink, the red Camero which I thought was a safe bet. Our colorful drinks showed up, we sipped it and was pleasantly surprised / shocked by how strong they were. We all kinda looked at each other and thought Jesus, I thought these were going to be girly drinks but our waitress giggled and explained to us that Candi Bar wasn’t for light weights :) The DJ played a variety of mainstream dance tunes like my favorite Daft Punk, Modjo, etc.. Candi Bar was lit up in blue when suddenly after about 15 mins it went into an orange mode. It’s amazing what lighting can do to a persons mood, it’s almost as if the orange stirred my hormones or something…..or maybe it was my “man drink”. In any case, it was time to hit the washroom and explore the back of the club. You’ll see in this quick video that I took with my Mino HD camera that there’s a great area to dance, surrounded by booths with jelly bean machines on them. Just as I thought Candi Bar couldn’t surprise me anymore, it did with its urinals. Now I want you to check out photo # 4 And tell me that part of you (if you’re a guy) doesn’t feel slightly turned on. I must admit, I had stage fright and had to take many deep breaths and think about waterfalls in order to relax enough to go. I washed my hands and laughed at the tiger toilet seat, their attention to detail was impressive. The boyz and I left around 10:30 just as it was beginning to fill up. I can definitely see myself coming back for a night of dancing. The crowd might be a little young for us 30 year olds but that’s cool, with enough Candi Bar drinks and their dazzling light show, we’ll probably end up acting like 18 year olds all over again :) SexinessAtmosphereExcitementValueService

CommentsI am going to give it a try soon enough! I just like the name...Candi! flows so easily! Top 3 best breakfast restaurant in PlayaI walked in one day and ordered 2 chocolate croissants to go, that’s how I got hooked on Xocolatier. Steph and I decided to try their breakfast as we heard that the chef of Cocina 38 was also cooking for Xocolatier (they share the same kitchen). As expected, the food was amazing. We tried their fruit salad which came with 3 little cute jars, one with honey, yogurt and the other with granola. We also tried their eggs Benedict, which is very common in Play Del Carmen. To top is off, a fresh smoothie which was nice and rich, not the water down type. Overall, I really loved Xocolatier. Their prices are very good, it’s a clean new place, the food is fantastic, free wifi, it’s a no brainer…..you need to try Xocolatier. TasteCreativityAtmosphereValueService

CommentsIf you love older women, this is for you!Just finished watching Argentina beat Greece in what was a close World Cup match. This bar (like most I’d imagine) was very quiet during the day but with over 5 bars on the bottom floor and 10+ tvs, every seat was a good seat! For those of you who aren’t from Montreal, Crecsent Street is know for two things. American tourists and cougars…..ya, those older ladies that are looking for a good time. if you like either or, you’re going to want to swing by this street and in particular this bar. So there you have it, writing this review live from “Winnies” a bar where you just might meet that old school teacher you always had a crush on :) SexinessAtmosphereExcitementValueService

CommentsHow they built these by hand still amazes meMost tourists come to Mexico for the beautiful beaches, tequila, and nightlife and sadly some will never venture out of their all-inclusive hotels to see the other side of this country. Our group decided to rent a van and make the trip to Coba from Playa Del Carmen. It was all highway, a nice drive (really nice when you have a driver :) and about an hour and half away. When you arrive at the Coba ruins you can buy your ticket on the spot if you haven’t purchased one already. We applied sun screen, used the washrooms (bring toilet paper because every public I seem to use in Mexico never has TP!) As you walk in you have a few options on how you want to tackle the Coba ruins. a) Rent a bike. Most people will do this. The terrain is pretty easy to handle but if you’re really not the biker type try option b. b) Rent a driver. Yes, sit back and relax as some poor kid does all the biking for you. Don’t feel guilty, heck I didn’t, these drivers handle a few tourists a day so those tips add up. You can technically sit up to two people per cart (see photos for an example). c) Walk. If you love to hike, or just plain broke, walk it. If I had to guess, it would probably take you a good 2 hours to walk around and see some of the ruins. To make it to the largest one would take 40 mins at a good pace. You’re in the forest so it’s not like the sun is beating down on you the whole time. The hike up the main ruin was pretty steep. It didn’t take me long, maybe 3 mins of power walking but I was out of breath when I reached the top. Stay low to the ground, hang on the rope and take one step at a time. Coming down was much harder….it’s easy to imagine someone tumbling down so be cautious if you want to stop half way and take some photos….again, stay low. The view up there was ok. You’re surrounded by forest, not much to see but nevertheless amazing to be standing on these ancient Mayan ruins that we’re built by hand. It’s moments like this when you’re reminded of what people can do with little technology. UniquenessChallengeExcitementValueService

CommentsOne of the top 10 best rooftop terraces in MontrealIt’s a beautiful Friday afternoon and I’m sitting here with my Ipad wrtting this review (loving technology :) If you’re looking for a rooftop terrace to grab a drink after work Suite 701 is a great option. It’s an L shaped bar that could prob fit a good 100 people. My waiter suggested that I try a special beer that’s supposedly produced by St Ambroise exclusively for Suite 701. It’s a light lager called MTL (stands for Montreal…..check the photos for my pic) The menu is very simple, I ended up trying the New York steak (asked for med rare but got med) which was ok, nothing to go crazy over. Just. Warning, it gets pretty windy up here. I’m constantly looking over my almost empty glasses to make sure they don’t blow over. The staff is friendly, bilingual, pretty quick to clear the tables. if you get here early enough head to the back of the bar where you’ll find two white pods…..well shaded, wind free and perfect for groups of up to 6 people. CommentsThe best lemon chicken! If you’re looking for another a great hole in the wall, off the beaten path local restaurant, La Portena is it. I lived a few blocks away and would stop by a few times, always getting their great lemon chicken. Some of the rugby players I played with work there….they told me how they prepare the lemon chicken….I didn’t have any luck re-creating it at home! La Portena offers great value. I would eat a half chicken, half baked potato and salad for $75 pesos which is roughly $6 USD. You can get cheaper dishes or go all out for $130 pesos and get a Rib Eye. If you’re on the move and want good food at a great price, try La Portena. Tell the rugby guys Jazz says hi :) TasteCreativityAtmosphereValueService

CommentsCasual beach clubThere’s basically 2 beach clubs to dance at night, Blue Parrot and Coco Maya. I’ve been here a few times, enjoy dancing in the middle dance floor which always seems to have a few people. I’d say that Blue Parrot is more crowded but I like the openness of Coco Maya…..much more spread out. Head to the back of the bar and you’ll be directly on the beach. They have a few day beds you can chill on but when the mosquito’s are out (depending on the time of the year) it gets brutal, impossible to relax when you’re being eaten alive lol If you’re looking for a casual beach club this is a good option. They don’t normally charge cover if you show up with ladies whereas Blue Parrot charges guys all the time. Enjoy yourself! SexinessAtmosphereExcitementValueService

CommentsLooking to pick up? This could be it :)If you’re looking to dance on the beach, Blue Parrot is your best option (followed closely by neighboring Coco Maya). Head to the back of this beach club and you’ll find a long bar leading to the elevated dance floor. If you need to cool down from all that MJ playing, walk a few steps and you’re right on the beach! As you’re walking in, look to your right, that’s where they usually play house music. It’s a nice open area with a few places to sit. Most people head to the back where the music is more mainstream dance. SexinessAtmosphereExcitementValueService

CommentsMy no 1 choice for a Mexican restaurant in Playa Del CarmenEverything went right during our first taste test at Yaxche. It recently moved to this location (off 5th Avenue) and it’s been very busy….so busy in fact that I’ve showed up twice and wasn’t able to get a table. Ya, I know I should make reservations but I’m a guy…..we hate committing to anything :) Third time was as Borat would say “great success!” Ramon, the host who turned out to be the owner was really nice in placing us by the street where we could keep our dog. The waiter brought out a container with water for the dog, amazing! The waiter was funny, explained to us the various local Mayan dishes often ending his sentence with “this one is yummy yummy” Steph, Cris and I tried their soup, fish, tacos with sweet pork, and of course their drinks :) Everything we had tasted great, they were warm, well presented, came out in a timely fashion. Now I’m going to be super super picky here but their Bloody Cesar could have been better. Ramon even sent out a dish with various entrees as a thank you for coming. When people ask me for a good local Mexican restaurant I will tell them they have to try Yaxche. I was impressed, really impressed with everything here. TasteCreativityAtmosphereValueService

CommentsAgreed!Thumbs up on the service and ambiance. Its all about those little details that make one feel spoiled: water for the dog, an extra dish on the house, smiles and Ramon´s genuine interest on knowing us. I will for sure go back, not only because of the service, but because I would love to explore more of their dishes that represent quite an interesting blend of cultures. I tried a yummy tender chicken ("Poc-chuc") marinated with mandarin sauce, tomato and chipotle: evidence of the Chinese influence. These are probably traces of flavors passed by Asians who arrived to work in Yucatan during the 19th century. It was all a representation of the Mayan traditional dishes brought to the contemporary palate: shredded pork tacos ("cohinita"), tamales, lime soup, bread and butter wrapped in corn leaves... you name it. Congratulations to the Chef, I would only suggest an upgrade on their cocktails which seemed quite standard. I totally agree with Jazz, if you are looking to taste traditional flavors and get a sense of the roots of Mexico, Yaxche is definitely the place to go. Bad opening night but has potential to be very goodEven though my first experience at Opa during opening night wasn’t amazing, I think with a few key changes Opa could be a hit in Playa Del Carmen. I was really disappointed with their tzatziki sauce which is 70% of the reason why I love Greek food! I’m sure they’ll fix these things… The location is nice, not far from 12th Avenue if you’re planning to head out later. It’s open concept makes it ideal for people watching on 5th Avenue, and keeps the place cool in the evenings. Lots of potential here… TasteCreativityAtmosphereValueService
