Great for families seeking value

I toured the hotel a few months ago and got a good feel for it. It’s a large hotel that offers pretty much all the amenities you could hope for. I liked the idea that this hotels owner is very much dedicated to investing capital into making this one of the few truly eco friendly hotels in the Riviera Maya.

Some rooms are much more modern then others so make sure to inquire. They have a great kids park, several large cenotes to swim in, a few animals to see and of course they’re directly on the beach! A good option for families seeking good value in Mexico while contributing to a company that’s serious about the environment!

Where the chefs are your waiters!

Guv and I tried Kitchen Galerie and really loved this restaurant. I’m going to put this place on my top 11 best Montreal restaurants (2011) for sure. The concept is pretty cool. The 3 chefs do everything, from cooking, to greeting you, to being your waiter.

We started with the oysters which were fresh. The Jean Talon market is literally just around the corner so you can be assured that the freshest produce is being selected by the Kitchen Galerie team. The menu is simple, always a good sign in my books as this means these chefs aren’t trying to please everyone….they specialize. There was lots of foie gras options which I skipped.

The bottle of wine we ordered was about $45, fair considering what we bought. I decided to go all out and try their signature dish, the cote de boeuf for 2 people and super sized it with the addition of foie gras and black truffle shavings ($80 + $40 foie gras option) It was served medium rare just as we ordered it and man, it was good!

During our meal the group beside us kept looking over to this monster dish which Guv and I were struggling to finish. We offered to share a few pieces with them which they appreciated. This is the type of vibe you feel at Kitchen Galerie, small, personal, like it’s your own kitchen. So after we polished that bad boy we couldn’t say no to testing out dessert.

We had this Joe Louis chocolate cake and an amazing rich, chocolate type of brownie meets cake thing. The thing about Kitchen Galerie is that their menu changes daily so I may never get to taste that dessert again but wow, the fact that I remember it says something.

Some feedback for the owners. I’m a bloddy Cesar fan and I think you guys could do much better. You should try the bloody caesars at Liverpool House to get an idea of how a “wow” drink can be made. I’m saying this because you guys produce amazing food, so why not have an amazing drink? At least one wow drink.

So overall a really good restaurant worth trying. I love their concept, love their food, great job guys!

Tapas bar with cool lighting and HD TV's

The boyz and I tried Rachel Rachel this past winter when the Habs were playing. I thought it was a great place to watch the game, wasn’t too packed and we could get a drink / food fairly quickly. It was an older crowd, I’d say my age and up and most people were French which of course means cool chicks.

The service was great, they came by often and made sure our group was ok. I haven’t come here to party but could see myself coming for some late night drinks, maybe even sticking around if the crowd started to dance.

My only negative comment, or constructive criticism was the food. For what we paid and what we received, not impressed. The chicken was dry and most dishes weren’t impressive (feedback from our group, not just me). I know this is primarily a bar but if the owners want to take things up another level, improve the food.

Overall, cool place to check out. It’s small enough that you feel like you can meet others and old enough where you could actually have some interesting conversations. Worth coming here at least once!

One of my Top 11 restaurants in Playa Del Carmen

I’ve been eyeing this corner of 38th for a while now wondering what the heck was going to open up there. Man, I wish they had opened sooner! I’ve been to Luna Maya twice and will prob head there a 3rd time. Where to start..

Well for one he service here is really really good. Playa isn’t known for quick, attentive service (you go to Cancun for that) but they’ve got it right here. I love the atmosphere too, it’s cool being upstairs overlooking the streets below. There’s usually a nice breeze up there too.

Now about the food! I’ve tried a little of everything. Their bloody caesars are good, the entrees, mains, desserts, everything was good! I like the fact that they’re focussing on a few dishes and not trying to be all to everyone. Whoever is behind this operation clearly has experience and I hope that other restaurants take note.

If someone asks me what’s the best Mexican cuisine restaurant in Playa (higher end), Luna Maya takes the no 1 spot in my opinion. Yaxche is also another really good place, pick either one and you’ll walk out happy. I know I did :)

Down to earth people

I like going to The Roof Bar because of the people. I feel very comfortable showing up dressed in any manner, James and Cristina are super laid back people. I spent New Years here with some friends from Montreal and it seems like every time I stop by there’s a cool mix of down to earth people from all over the world. Come by and say hi to James + team!

Off the beaten path...Mr. Chicken

If you’re looking for something really local, the real Mexico than I suggest you stop by Zurito which is located on 46th (CTM) and 10th Avenue. Try Manuels chicken which comes with fresh tortillas, hot sauce and soup…..all for an amazing price, $90 pesos!

Mr. Chicken as some call him is a really nice guy. A bit shy at first but he takes pride in what he does. Probably the most well travelled local I’ve met to date. Enjoy this discovery!

Where I'm spending winter in Mexico.

Last year Steph introduced the Luna Maya Condos community to me and I decided to stay for 6 months. I came back for another 6 months and included it in our travel show. Having 24 / 7 security is important to me and Luna Maya offers this.

Rental rates vary by season but expect to pay anywhere from $800 USD / week to $2,000 / week (Holidays). Just to give you a rough idea I’m paying $14,000 PESOS which is roughly $1,200 USD / month but this is based on a 6 month rental. It doesn’t include electricity which can get pricey if you blast the a/c 24/7. I paid my power bill yesterday and for 2 months is cost me $3,200 PESOS ($266 USD). I only use the a/c at night in one room.

What I really like about Luna Maya is that this is a part of town that’s developing. It’s low key, very quiet at night and most of all….the beach is 2 blocks away!! Rather than pay $4,000 USD + per month to be on the beach I don’t mind being a few blocks away.

I just want to warn you though. Some owners rent their units out individually which can make a huge difference. Last year I rented directly through Luna Mayas’ owner / developer Gerardo Schwarz ( geschwarz@msn.com) who runs these units;

Sol 1
Sol 3
Sol 4
Sol 5

Tormenta 22
Tormenta 62

Estrella 1
Estrella 3

This year I dealt with an owner direct which started off as hell. I showed up and there were no bed sheets, no cutlery, nothing….and I rented it fully furnished. After many months I managed to work something out but never will I do this again….always make sure you’re renting a fully serviced unit. Haydee who’s the manager here does an amazing job, she speaks English which really helps. The security guards are nice but don’t speak a word of English.

So overall great value by renting these condos. Just make sure you’re dealing with the developer direct which includes Internet, tv, maid service or risk dealing with an owner direct and risk adding more grey hairs :) You can also use the pool area in the back which they’ve now set up wifi. Now you know where I like to write some of my reviews!

Beach is across the street!

The film crew stay here while we were filming the Tripulu HD pilot. The beach in front of Villa Turquesa is amazing, very wide and long which is great if you’re into long walks. The villa has a nice living area where most of us watched TV and chilled out at night. Some of the group would head upstairs and hang out by the rooftop pool.

I think Villa Turquesa is ideal for couples our age or one family who had children old enough to not worry about them falling down stairs, into pools etc.. This area of Playa Del Carmen has many villas so if you’re the type that likes having a huge lawn and want your neighbors to be a few miles away, this isn;t for you. This villa is for the guy that wants to open the front door, take 20 steps and hit the beach while still in his bathrobe :)

Simple seafood dishes

I tried Baremars’ tuna tartare and liked it very much. They’ve just recently opened up and chose a great location. This area now has many great restaurants to chose from and with Baremars primo corner placement it should benefit from a rising tide as more tourists come this part of Playa.

It’s a very casual, simple restaurant. It’s a type of place you stop by, grab a quick bite to eat and then move on.

A great new seafood restaurant in Playa Del Carmen!

Our dishes were now being served by La Sirenas very friendly staff which by the way the girls kept whispering about. They all seemed to have a crush on our waiter and Vincent. The clams were placed in front of me, it was time to try something new. I took one of the clams and added some lime to it. I was shocked to see that it was so fresh that it was still moving! …yes, this little guy was served so fresh it was still alive. I looked at Vincent and he said “some of them gave us a hard time”. Ladies and gentleman this is when I knew that La Sirena was for real. Unfortunately these clams were so fresh it scared Carina and she couldn’t bring herself to try one.

Throughout the evening I tasted several dishes such as their thinly sliced raw tuna. I was a little disappointed with this dish simply because they “drowned” it in soy sauce. This happened with another dish too. My feedback to Vincent and his team included these points;

What I liked…..

**The seafood is fresh. I asked for Oysters and they said they couldn’t get any today so it wasn’t an option. I like hearing this. Seafood needs to be fresh or we risk a painful experience.

**The service was great. A good team will ensure your drinks are filled and know when you want something.

**The casual atmosphere. I felt like I could dress up or show up in shorts. Leah was also permitted to sit beside us which was cool. Dog lovers take note, so long as you sit outside they’ll cool with it.

**I thought the prices were fair given how fresh the seafood was.

What needs to be improved…

**Your fresh seafood tastes great but some of your dishes had too much soy sauce or other sauces. By the time you have that last bite of fish it ends up tasting like sauce. Maybe put these sauces on the side or reduce the amount you initially put?

**I know the restaurant is new and you need time to make changes. I just found that Cuban music in a seafood restaurant which is very colorful kind of gave me mixed messages. But now that I know one of the owners is Colombian and you’re from Spain, it made a little more sense why La Sirena seemed to be a little of everything but I don’t think most people will know this when they walk in. Maybe if you dimmed the lights a little the colors wouldn’t stand out as much + played music from Spain or any calm, authentic seafood town related music?

**Your chocolate mousse wasn’t good. It didn’t taste like chocolate.

It was time for dessert which three options were given. We chose two of them, a corn bread cake served with a vanilla sauce and a chocolate mousse cake. Truthfully I wasn’t blown away by the La Sirenas desserts. Francois and I each had a bite of the chocolate mousse cake and looked at each other. It was that confused what just happened look. Clearly it didn’t taste like chocolate, we weren’t sure what it tasted like.

So overall I really enjoyed my experience at La Sirena. I think for a restaurant that opened 40+ days ago the team at La Sirena has done a great job. The service was excellent, the decor was interesting and most importantly the seafood was so fresh it was still moving! At the end of the day it’s all about quality food at a fair price and La Sirena accomplished this mission. Congrats Vincent! i’ll definitely be coming back.

One of the most interesting desserts I've tried in Montreal!

Max from Cafe Mariani suggested that I try this local restaurant. So I called up one of the boyz (Nick) and we decided to give Le Boucan a go. There’s many new interesting restaurants opening in St. Henri, you can really see this part of the city developing for the better. Le Boucan is another positive addition.

It’s a small restaurant, if I had to guess seating for approx 40 max. Their menu is simple, no more than 9 mains to choose from. We decided to order their ribs which is what Le Boucan is known for and their BBQ chicken. Each came with a side option of fries or salad…..you can pretty much guess what side we chose :)

I kinda liked the rustic feel of Le Boucan. Maybe because it was snowing outside and the holiday season brought out the Christmas lights but I felt as if I was eating in a wooden cabin up north. The casual atmosphere and Habs game on really made it feel very relax, like if I had rib sauce on my t-shirt no one would care type of relaxed.

The ribs came out and I went to town on them. I’m not a huge rib guy but I’ve tried my fair share. These ribs were pretty firm, as in the meat didn’t fall off the bone but they were in no way dry ribs. The sauce stayed on, didn’t drip down your hands and arms like Barby Barns ribs. Overall a thumbs up…..Now came the most interesting part of our evening….dessert!

Like any restaurant we visit and inspired from Guvs (another friend) way of doing things….i asked our waitress for her recommendation. She suggested this warm chocolate brownie that has bacon in it served with vanilla ice cream. Bacon? Yep, turns out the combination of sweet and salty was an amazing mix.

I’ve tried god knows how many restaurants and the true test for me is if I remember them after x amount of time. I don’t remember their ribs being amazing but I do remember their dessert and warm, rustic, friendly environment. So go on, give these guys a try and let me know what you think!
