My ReviewsOne of the most interesting desserts I've tried in Montreal!Max from Cafe Mariani suggested that I try this local restaurant. So I called up one of the boyz (Nick) and we decided to give Le Boucan a go. There’s many new interesting restaurants opening in St. Henri, you can really see this part of the city developing for the better. Le Boucan is another positive addition. It’s a small restaurant, if I had to guess seating for approx 40 max. Their menu is simple, no more than 9 mains to choose from. We decided to order their ribs which is what Le Boucan is known for and their BBQ chicken. Each came with a side option of fries or salad…..you can pretty much guess what side we chose :) I kinda liked the rustic feel of Le Boucan. Maybe because it was snowing outside and the holiday season brought out the Christmas lights but I felt as if I was eating in a wooden cabin up north. The casual atmosphere and Habs game on really made it feel very relax, like if I had rib sauce on my t-shirt no one would care type of relaxed. The ribs came out and I went to town on them. I’m not a huge rib guy but I’ve tried my fair share. These ribs were pretty firm, as in the meat didn’t fall off the bone but they were in no way dry ribs. The sauce stayed on, didn’t drip down your hands and arms like Barby Barns ribs. Overall a thumbs up…..Now came the most interesting part of our evening….dessert! Like any restaurant we visit and inspired from Guvs (another friend) way of doing things….i asked our waitress for her recommendation. She suggested this warm chocolate brownie that has bacon in it served with vanilla ice cream. Bacon? Yep, turns out the combination of sweet and salty was an amazing mix. I’ve tried god knows how many restaurants and the true test for me is if I remember them after x amount of time. I don’t remember their ribs being amazing but I do remember their dessert and warm, rustic, friendly environment. So go on, give these guys a try and let me know what you think! Could just be the best tartares in Montreal..My brother introduced Marche 27 to me about 2 summers ago. every time we go out to eat we’ll usually try a restaurants tartare. I’ve tried god knows how many tartares dishes in many countries and to be honest, Marche 27 is one of the of the very few tartare restaurants that I remember being very good. It’s a very simple restaurant, more of a little cafe than your typical sit down and spend a few hours type of restaurant. During the summer they’ll set up 2,3 tables on Prince Arthur (it’s always nice to be outside) which we all knows gets really busy on weekend nights as several bars are just a block away (Rouge, Gasbar, B-Side etc..) When I come here I’ll usually try the tuna tartare L’ancienne style. I really love their selection of “styles” which for tartare lover, really changes the taste of a dish. There’s only so many ways you slice up tuna, it’s the sauces that add variety to what could easily be a very bland tasting meal. The team here does a great job in preparing fresh tartare dishes. I’ve been to some restaurants where the tartares look like a solid jelly jello bowl….you know, the type that giggles when you shake the dish. That’s because these place prepare it too far in advance, it’s not fresh….I like tartares that are cubed, freshly cut, it has to be and Marche 27 does a great job at accomplishing this. I’ll sometimes get a glass fo red wine and they used to have this killer tuna burger but I’m not sure if they still do. In any case, if you’re a tartare love give Marche 27 a try. It’s a simple place, prices are a tad on the high side but hey….if you want the good stuff sometimes you’ve got to pay for it and I’m ok with this….just wish I could make this at home, might save me a few bucks! CommentsA great choice on those cold winter days!I like going to Pho Bang New York in Montreals Chinatown when it’s cold outside. Yes sometimes finding parking around here is a bitch but dinner is soooo cheap here, it’s worth it. You’ll notice when you walk in that it’s always busy….a good sign. So when you walk just wait for one of the waiters to signal you in, they’ll tell you where to sit. I’m usually eating alone but because it’s so busy here, you blend in well. If you’re on a first date eating soup probably isn’t a good idea because it can get sloppy. I’ll always order the no 8 soup with extra meat. The soup comes with noodles, onions and un-cooked raw beef strips that you put in the hot soup. Add some of their hot sauce and chow away. They offer hot tea when you arrive, great for those cold winter days. Pho Bang New York is a perfect hit and run restaurant that’s always busy. Dinner for two might set you back $15….if you go crazy and order a round of Cokes, you just might spend $20. So if dinner is on you that night, I suggest Pho Bang, you can thank me later :) TasteCreativityAtmosphereValueService

CommentsTalk of the townI first heard about ComoComo from Amy who wrote an article on this new restaurant for Tripulu. I’ve been in Playa for about 3 weeks now and have eaten at ComoComo 3 times already. Three times in the last 6 days to be exact. Why? Here’s why… 1. I’m all about value and ComoComo defines value. For what you pay and what you receive, ComoComo scores a perfect 5 value stars. Try the tuna tartare…really good. To give you an example, last night dinner for 3 people which included a bottle of wine, entrees, main dishes and 2 deserts came up to about $120 USD. 2. The service here is very good. My first night here we showed up with a group of 5 without any reservations. The restaurant was full so we decided to wait. They kindly brought each of us a glass of red wine and apologized for the wait. That to me is amazing, we never asked for anything and they went out of their way to make us feel wanted. These guys just get it. 3. It’s close to home :) So, if you’re coming to Playa Del Carmen and you want a great meal for a really fair price come to ComoComo. TasteCreativityAtmosphereValueService

CommentsCute little tapas restaurantA few of us tried Pintxo last night and overall we gave it a thumbs up! They have roughly 20+ tapas to choose from but I want to warn you right now, the portions are small. Don’t let this scare you because if you order 4 – 6 tapas which tend to be very rich in flavor you’ll be full. I usually eat a lot so I payed it safe and ordered a main course, the filet mignon. I’m going to say it right now but this was perhaps the best “value” filet mignon I’ve seen in Montreal so far! Yes, for $22 I had a perfectly cooked medium well filet de boeuf as they call it, served with mashed potatoes and asparagus. Combine this with 2 tapas and I was left stretching my legs at the end of the meal. Pintxo is a small restaurant which gives it that intimate feeling but when it’s a full house, I found it a bit loud and tough to hear our conversations. Towards the end of the night it cleared out and I was much more relaxed :) Great service, meals came out quickly, I will definitely head back to Pintxo at some point! CommentsOld Montreals famous steak houseEveryone has heard of Gibby’s in Old Montreal. It’s the type of restaurant your Dad introduces you to when you’re old enough to appreciate a good steak. I love the fact that Gibby’s is in an old building, the stone walls really add to the atmosphere. It’s an expensive restaurant and the food didn’t blow me away. Would I come back for a steak, prob not, there’s much better in Montreal. But would I come back and bring a guest from out of the city….ya, probably, just so they can see a little of Old Montreal. On the plus side the service was quick and efficient and they can all pretty much speak English (don’t be shy if you’re a tourist). Lots of history, always busy, older crowd, a restaurant to try once…. TasteCreativityAtmosphereValueService

CommentsSomething newAfter 8 great months in Playa Del Carmen, Mexico it was time to come back to Montreal. Paul, Nick and I decided to venture out in un-familiar territory, a magical land where people are friendly, attractive and the bars are very chill….yes, this is the Plateau. We showed up at Candi Bar pretty early because we heard this place can get packed. As we walked in the first thing we noticed was the amazing colors, the lighting in this bar is really cool. The second thing I noticed was the cute French bartenders that were very friendly, very bilingual, and very cool to talk to. She handed us our giant lollipop drink menu (very similar to Gogo’s horoscope shot menu) and we made our choices. I went for the man drink, the red Camero which I thought was a safe bet. Our colorful drinks showed up, we sipped it and was pleasantly surprised / shocked by how strong they were. We all kinda looked at each other and thought Jesus, I thought these were going to be girly drinks but our waitress giggled and explained to us that Candi Bar wasn’t for light weights :) The DJ played a variety of mainstream dance tunes like my favorite Daft Punk, Modjo, etc.. Candi Bar was lit up in blue when suddenly after about 15 mins it went into an orange mode. It’s amazing what lighting can do to a persons mood, it’s almost as if the orange stirred my hormones or something…..or maybe it was my “man drink”. In any case, it was time to hit the washroom and explore the back of the club. You’ll see in this quick video that I took with my Mino HD camera that there’s a great area to dance, surrounded by booths with jelly bean machines on them. Just as I thought Candi Bar couldn’t surprise me anymore, it did with its urinals. Now I want you to check out photo # 4 And tell me that part of you (if you’re a guy) doesn’t feel slightly turned on. I must admit, I had stage fright and had to take many deep breaths and think about waterfalls in order to relax enough to go. I washed my hands and laughed at the tiger toilet seat, their attention to detail was impressive. The boyz and I left around 10:30 just as it was beginning to fill up. I can definitely see myself coming back for a night of dancing. The crowd might be a little young for us 30 year olds but that’s cool, with enough Candi Bar drinks and their dazzling light show, we’ll probably end up acting like 18 year olds all over again :) SexinessAtmosphereExcitementValueService

CommentsI am going to give it a try soon enough! I just like the name...Candi! flows so easily! Top 3 best breakfast restaurant in PlayaI walked in one day and ordered 2 chocolate croissants to go, that’s how I got hooked on Xocolatier. Steph and I decided to try their breakfast as we heard that the chef of Cocina 38 was also cooking for Xocolatier (they share the same kitchen). As expected, the food was amazing. We tried their fruit salad which came with 3 little cute jars, one with honey, yogurt and the other with granola. We also tried their eggs Benedict, which is very common in Play Del Carmen. To top is off, a fresh smoothie which was nice and rich, not the water down type. Overall, I really loved Xocolatier. Their prices are very good, it’s a clean new place, the food is fantastic, free wifi, it’s a no brainer…..you need to try Xocolatier. TasteCreativityAtmosphereValueService

CommentsIf you love older women, this is for you!Just finished watching Argentina beat Greece in what was a close World Cup match. This bar (like most I’d imagine) was very quiet during the day but with over 5 bars on the bottom floor and 10+ tvs, every seat was a good seat! For those of you who aren’t from Montreal, Crecsent Street is know for two things. American tourists and cougars…..ya, those older ladies that are looking for a good time. if you like either or, you’re going to want to swing by this street and in particular this bar. So there you have it, writing this review live from “Winnies” a bar where you just might meet that old school teacher you always had a crush on :) SexinessAtmosphereExcitementValueService

CommentsHow they built these by hand still amazes meMost tourists come to Mexico for the beautiful beaches, tequila, and nightlife and sadly some will never venture out of their all-inclusive hotels to see the other side of this country. Our group decided to rent a van and make the trip to Coba from Playa Del Carmen. It was all highway, a nice drive (really nice when you have a driver :) and about an hour and half away. When you arrive at the Coba ruins you can buy your ticket on the spot if you haven’t purchased one already. We applied sun screen, used the washrooms (bring toilet paper because every public I seem to use in Mexico never has TP!) As you walk in you have a few options on how you want to tackle the Coba ruins. a) Rent a bike. Most people will do this. The terrain is pretty easy to handle but if you’re really not the biker type try option b. b) Rent a driver. Yes, sit back and relax as some poor kid does all the biking for you. Don’t feel guilty, heck I didn’t, these drivers handle a few tourists a day so those tips add up. You can technically sit up to two people per cart (see photos for an example). c) Walk. If you love to hike, or just plain broke, walk it. If I had to guess, it would probably take you a good 2 hours to walk around and see some of the ruins. To make it to the largest one would take 40 mins at a good pace. You’re in the forest so it’s not like the sun is beating down on you the whole time. The hike up the main ruin was pretty steep. It didn’t take me long, maybe 3 mins of power walking but I was out of breath when I reached the top. Stay low to the ground, hang on the rope and take one step at a time. Coming down was much harder….it’s easy to imagine someone tumbling down so be cautious if you want to stop half way and take some photos….again, stay low. The view up there was ok. You’re surrounded by forest, not much to see but nevertheless amazing to be standing on these ancient Mayan ruins that we’re built by hand. It’s moments like this when you’re reminded of what people can do with little technology. UniquenessChallengeExcitementValueService

CommentsOne of the top 10 best rooftop terraces in MontrealIt’s a beautiful Friday afternoon and I’m sitting here with my Ipad wrtting this review (loving technology :) If you’re looking for a rooftop terrace to grab a drink after work Suite 701 is a great option. It’s an L shaped bar that could prob fit a good 100 people. My waiter suggested that I try a special beer that’s supposedly produced by St Ambroise exclusively for Suite 701. It’s a light lager called MTL (stands for Montreal…..check the photos for my pic) The menu is very simple, I ended up trying the New York steak (asked for med rare but got med) which was ok, nothing to go crazy over. Just. Warning, it gets pretty windy up here. I’m constantly looking over my almost empty glasses to make sure they don’t blow over. The staff is friendly, bilingual, pretty quick to clear the tables. if you get here early enough head to the back of the bar where you’ll find two white pods…..well shaded, wind free and perfect for groups of up to 6 people.
