My ReviewsOne of the top 10 best rooftop terraces in MontrealIt’s a beautiful Friday afternoon and I’m sitting here with my Ipad wrtting this review (loving technology :) If you’re looking for a rooftop terrace to grab a drink after work Suite 701 is a great option. It’s an L shaped bar that could prob fit a good 100 people. My waiter suggested that I try a special beer that’s supposedly produced by St Ambroise exclusively for Suite 701. It’s a light lager called MTL (stands for Montreal…..check the photos for my pic) The menu is very simple, I ended up trying the New York steak (asked for med rare but got med) which was ok, nothing to go crazy over. Just. Warning, it gets pretty windy up here. I’m constantly looking over my almost empty glasses to make sure they don’t blow over. The staff is friendly, bilingual, pretty quick to clear the tables. if you get here early enough head to the back of the bar where you’ll find two white pods…..well shaded, wind free and perfect for groups of up to 6 people. The best lemon chicken! If you’re looking for another a great hole in the wall, off the beaten path local restaurant, La Portena is it. I lived a few blocks away and would stop by a few times, always getting their great lemon chicken. Some of the rugby players I played with work there….they told me how they prepare the lemon chicken….I didn’t have any luck re-creating it at home! La Portena offers great value. I would eat a half chicken, half baked potato and salad for $75 pesos which is roughly $6 USD. You can get cheaper dishes or go all out for $130 pesos and get a Rib Eye. If you’re on the move and want good food at a great price, try La Portena. Tell the rugby guys Jazz says hi :) TasteCreativityAtmosphereValueService

CommentsCasual beach clubThere’s basically 2 beach clubs to dance at night, Blue Parrot and Coco Maya. I’ve been here a few times, enjoy dancing in the middle dance floor which always seems to have a few people. I’d say that Blue Parrot is more crowded but I like the openness of Coco Maya…..much more spread out. Head to the back of the bar and you’ll be directly on the beach. They have a few day beds you can chill on but when the mosquito’s are out (depending on the time of the year) it gets brutal, impossible to relax when you’re being eaten alive lol If you’re looking for a casual beach club this is a good option. They don’t normally charge cover if you show up with ladies whereas Blue Parrot charges guys all the time. Enjoy yourself! SexinessAtmosphereExcitementValueService

CommentsLooking to pick up? This could be it :)If you’re looking to dance on the beach, Blue Parrot is your best option (followed closely by neighboring Coco Maya). Head to the back of this beach club and you’ll find a long bar leading to the elevated dance floor. If you need to cool down from all that MJ playing, walk a few steps and you’re right on the beach! As you’re walking in, look to your right, that’s where they usually play house music. It’s a nice open area with a few places to sit. Most people head to the back where the music is more mainstream dance. SexinessAtmosphereExcitementValueService

CommentsMy no 1 choice for a Mexican restaurant in Playa Del CarmenEverything went right during our first taste test at Yaxche. It recently moved to this location (off 5th Avenue) and it’s been very busy….so busy in fact that I’ve showed up twice and wasn’t able to get a table. Ya, I know I should make reservations but I’m a guy…..we hate committing to anything :) Third time was as Borat would say “great success!” Ramon, the host who turned out to be the owner was really nice in placing us by the street where we could keep our dog. The waiter brought out a container with water for the dog, amazing! The waiter was funny, explained to us the various local Mayan dishes often ending his sentence with “this one is yummy yummy” Steph, Cris and I tried their soup, fish, tacos with sweet pork, and of course their drinks :) Everything we had tasted great, they were warm, well presented, came out in a timely fashion. Now I’m going to be super super picky here but their Bloody Cesar could have been better. Ramon even sent out a dish with various entrees as a thank you for coming. When people ask me for a good local Mexican restaurant I will tell them they have to try Yaxche. I was impressed, really impressed with everything here. TasteCreativityAtmosphereValueService

CommentsAgreed!Thumbs up on the service and ambiance. Its all about those little details that make one feel spoiled: water for the dog, an extra dish on the house, smiles and Ramon´s genuine interest on knowing us. I will for sure go back, not only because of the service, but because I would love to explore more of their dishes that represent quite an interesting blend of cultures. I tried a yummy tender chicken ("Poc-chuc") marinated with mandarin sauce, tomato and chipotle: evidence of the Chinese influence. These are probably traces of flavors passed by Asians who arrived to work in Yucatan during the 19th century. It was all a representation of the Mayan traditional dishes brought to the contemporary palate: shredded pork tacos ("cohinita"), tamales, lime soup, bread and butter wrapped in corn leaves... you name it. Congratulations to the Chef, I would only suggest an upgrade on their cocktails which seemed quite standard. I totally agree with Jazz, if you are looking to taste traditional flavors and get a sense of the roots of Mexico, Yaxche is definitely the place to go. Bad opening night but has potential to be very goodEven though my first experience at Opa during opening night wasn’t amazing, I think with a few key changes Opa could be a hit in Playa Del Carmen. I was really disappointed with their tzatziki sauce which is 70% of the reason why I love Greek food! I’m sure they’ll fix these things… The location is nice, not far from 12th Avenue if you’re planning to head out later. It’s open concept makes it ideal for people watching on 5th Avenue, and keeps the place cool in the evenings. Lots of potential here… TasteCreativityAtmosphereValueService

CommentsBaby oil + topless = KoolKool Beach Club did a great job in hosting this years BPM festival which for house musique fans, was a great way to be introduced to Kool Beach Club. Guests have the option to dance around the pool area, or relax on the day beds located near the bar or directly on the beach. It can get really busy here, especially on Sunday’s. Kool is a competitor of Mamitas which is just down the beach. Basically these beach clubs are very similar to Nikki Beach beach clubs….same concept. Lounge around on a day bed and people watch, apply that baby oil and make sure to wear your best man thong….you’ll see it all here :) SexinessAtmosphereExcitementValueService

CommentsFeels like Miami 1970 all over againI was there on opening night last December and the place seems to be doing well ever since. It’s the same owners as Diablito Cha Cha Cha, La Santanera and Los Aguachiles. The DJ’s here don’t play your average pop 40 musich which is nice, it’s all cool chill house tunes you don’t normally hear. Canibal Royal is located away from the heart of Playa Del Carmen which I love, means you’re with locals or people who want to try something different vs. Mammitas Beach Club. Try their mini hamburgers or Diablito tacos which are prepared in an old fashion wood burning oven. It’s a great place to hang out, get some shade or good food while reading / tanning on the beach. As long as you order some food / drinks they won’t charge you for the chairs, otherwise expect to pay about 50 pesos ($4 US). The staff here speaks English, they’re of course attractive but most of all pretty nice people. Head to the upper floors to take nice ocean view photos or be that guy and stare at the babes below :) SexinessAtmosphereExcitementValueService

CommentsCheap seafood placeLast night was my second time trying Kool Fish. I’ve always seen locals eat there (a good sign) and with the restaurant being close to home I thought why not test her out again. I had their large fish ceviche which costs 130 pesos ($10.69 US) which is good value. It came in a large casserole with sliced tomatoes, onions; avocados and lime juice…pretty good. For the main dish I went with the grilled fish prepared garlic style. There’s roughly ten ways you can have them prepare the white grilled fish if garlic isn’t your thing. While waiting for dinner guests can watch TV on Kool Fishes’s flat screen. Yesterday they played some local music and had the TV on mute. Kool Fish is a cute little local restaurant. Some days I’ll walk by and it’s busy, other days a ghost town, I’m not sure why. The staff was very friendly and the food tasted good. Let me sum it all up by saying that while Kool Fish won’t win any major culinary awards, it’s a good value restaurant and that’s Mexico is all about :) TasteCreativityAtmosphereValueService

CommentsFriendly boutique web businessHeelatch is a relatively new company but its founders are well known within Montréal’s West Island community and in particular, me :) I had the pleasure to work with Dan Maitland for over 7 years as he helped design key projects for our company Luxury Retreats and CaribbeanWay. Dans’ a very upfront guy, someone who prefers that he hear exactly what you want so to avoid lost time. He’d rather be working then having to deal with project coordinators and office politics which is largely why partner Jeff “Moe” Taylor partnered with Dan. Jeff (who’s also a family friend and teammate on the rugby pitch) was born a peoples person. He gets along pretty much with everyone in the world and when you meet him you’ll most likely love him too. Together Jeff and Dan formed Heelatch, a company helping small business owners create their website and establish brand identity. This boutique agency is ideal for those that want personalized service. They work with a variety of budgets and have been very generous in donating their time for worthy causes. I wish them both continued success in building Heelatch. PunctualityProfessionalismKnowledgeValueService

CommentsWhere locals head after-hours in Playa Del CarmenIf you want to know where to find most of the locals after hours, La Santanera is the place. The bar is located across from Coco Bongo and features two floors. The top floor has high ceilings which I love because it can get packed up there, cool air flow is key for me. You won’t get much dancing up there but no worries, La Santanera has a closed in dance floor on the second level. Head to the far back right side upon entering is you want to hit the dance floor. I’d love to tell you more about it but at this point most of my memories go blank….I think the 20 beers and tequila shots had something to do with it. I used to like going to La Santanera but grew tired of paying the insanely expensive cover charge of 400 pesos ($32.47 US) Most locals (beautiful girls) will get in for free, as they should, and if you’re a well known regular with a good contact you’ll also get in for free. But that’s standard in the bar world, maybe in life too lol, it’s who you know right? You won’t find much commercial music playing at La Satanera. You can one of my previous stories (Mexican entrepreneurs aim for another win with Canibal Royal) where I interviewed the owners who said that this is what separated them from the other clubs. They wanted to focus on the locals and it’s clearly paid off. If you like the look and feel of this club, check out other businesses by the same owners (Diablito Cha Cha Cha review, Canibal Royal review, Los Aguachiles review and HD video) SexinessAtmosphereExcitementValueService
