Excellent Old Montreal restaurant

I’ve been to Chez L’Epicier a few times as our old office was located just down the street. The restaurant is located about a block East of the heart of Old Montreal, the Jacques Cartier square where people gather in the summer to pound back a few beers on one of the many terraces. You’ll often see business travelers here for lunch, or trendy locals that want to treat themselves.

The name literally means “The Grocery Store”. You can buy prepared meals or other items like sauces, cool looking bottled water, to go or of course sit down and order. It’s one of those restaurants where you wish they gave you bigger portions because you love the food so much. Out of the zillions of meals that I’ve had in my life, I can still taste their “club sandwich” desert. They score 5 on 5 for creativity with this one…..picture a club sandwich where the bread tastes like chocolate and the fries are actually fried pineapple. The whole thing looks like a club sandwich from far but it’s a great dessert. Not a super cheap restaurant, but worth treating yourself if you want to get a feel for Old Montreal.

The best grilled octopus I've ever tasted!

I recently met some Lebanese people from Montreal on the beach here in Mexico and one of the first things that came up was “have you tried La Sirene?” If you’re Lebanese and living in Montreal, there’s a 99% chance you’ve been to this restaurant! I love La Sirene….the food here is very good.

I’ll usually order the grilled Octopus which is still to this day the best I’ve tasted. The raw kibee is also one of my favorites. What’s cool about this restaurant is that you can walk into their fresh fish market which is attached to the restaurant. You can select fresh tuna, salmon, caviar if you’d like and they’ll have it prepared for you, delivered to your table. I did this once and wasn’t blown away; they killed the tuna by drowning it in too much sesame seed seasoning but the fish was fresh.

It’s an old school décor where the host seems to remember everyone who walks in the door. This guy has been around long enough to recognize young kids who’ve grown up and are now taking their loved ones to La Sirene. So if you want excellent Lebanese food, La Sirene de la Mer is a must!

Soba Sushi - Great sushi at half the price

I was introduced to Soba Sushi by my brother James about a year ago. It’s a small sushi restaurant in NDG (a little West from downtown Montreal) that offers pretty good sushi at a great price. It’s rare to find sushi places that taste good and don’t break the bank. The service was great too and our meals came out fairly quickly.

As a birthday present for my brother I called Soba Sushi from Mexico and asked them to deliver a huge platter with a special message, it went down perfectly. How many quality sushi shops do you know will deliver quickly and cheaply? Try Soba Sushi if you’re in NDG.

Great team, cool loft setting

Café Dominion is currently managed by my father and owned by my brother and head chef Shawn Jackson. What started off as being a simple kitchen for the Luxury Retreats team has now grown to become the go to restaurant in this part of Montreal. The St. Henri region is quickly becoming the new “plateau” of Montreal with beautiful waterfront lofts being built. Café Dominion is well positioned to serve employees of all local businesses but is currently a challenge to get too for walk in clients.

The team at CD is great. I’ve tasted some of Chef Shawn’s take out dinners and for what we pay, it’s excellent value for quality food. CD also does corporate events, ideal for companies that want a trendy loft type environment with good food at again, a fair price. Come see the team and say hi to my Dad :)

Good house tunes + topless women = great day

I’ve visited several Nikki Beaches and this is definitely one of the better ones. My brother and I love sushi, so we ordered their sushi dishes and were pleased. It’s located directly on the beach where we can see the Eden Rock Hotel in the distance. I’m a huge fan of the music Nikki Beach plays, it tends to be cool house tunes, a good beat that’s perfect to listen to while tanning on the beach or hacking away at work on your laptop. Throw in some attractive people and it’s a perfect office setting  Nikki Beach isn’t very cheap but than again neither is St. Barts so get used to paying those Euros dollars!

Left me wanting more!

After walking by this restaurant about a hundred times I finally tried it. Every dish I tested was amazing, very good food. The meal wasn’t cheap so it’s definitely a place where you take that special lady out or client. The portions leave you wanting more which is good because I could probably eat myself to death here. I had ordered a desert that included some ice cream and was impressed to see the chef come out and personally apologize for the softness in the ice cream. Their freezer had problems and he wanted to say he was sorry. The service was excellent, wine selection was healthy, bloody caesars weren’t the best but hey, now I’m just being very picky. It’s located on the opposite end of town so if you’re staying in Playacar take a cab or walk back (45 mins walk / 5 mins taxi), it’s a great way to digest and see all of Playa.

Modern beachfront restaurant

I haven’t tried their steaks but did test out lunch one day. I love the atmosphere; it’s modern, well lit, cool views of the ocean. On a hot day the central air-conditioning is nice to retreat to. I’ve sat by the bar and watched some college football; the staff here is very friendly and eager to help. Its central location is ideal if you’re looking to have lunch and continue your trek along the beach. I wish I could give you more feedback on the food; I’m due to test more items out. I would be very surprised if you left this restaurant un-happy.

Great steaks

I’ve been here at least 4 times now, partly because it’s close to home but mainly because their steaks are good. I’ll always order the flank steak which I’m told has the least amount of fat (I’m trying to watch my weight; rugby season is around the corner!). It comes served on a wooden paddle, without any sides so ask for the grilled vegetables if you want something to accompany that lonely steak. The service has been consistently good….meaning that I don’t wait long to receive my first drink, refills, seating, and the bill. My bill usually ends up being about $300 pesos (approx $24 US) but keep in mind I’m ordering the most expensive steak, super sized, plus grilled vegetables and a beer.

A little taste of lush Maui

I did like what any good tourist should do and went exploring Maui. Nick suggested that we hike the Iao Valley trail. We drove up and parked the car and started walking up…eventually the stairs stop and you’re hiking through the forest.

Now we also did what any young guys would do and decided to venture off the clearly marked path. After about 20 mins when the little path kinda disappeared and having Nick tell me about the few hikers each year that get lost, maybe even never come back, I decided to retreat back. It’s an ok hike and it does offer some really nice views but don’t venture too far off the path….the forest gets thick pretty quickly.

On our way back we jumped in the river and cooled off. The Iao Valley trail is something to do with the family, as a couple or even solo. Bring water, avoid wearing flip flops and if you’re going to make your own path….pack some TP and granola bars because if you’re not back by the time sets….the gates close and you’re in for a long night.

Nice view from the villa

I was at Garuda Estate inspecting the villa and assisting the photographer. I liked the layout of the villa. The living room opens up to the pool and you can even see the cool view from the main entrance as you walk into Garuda.

The bedrooms were pretty equal in size. There was a good amount of land on the estate which is nice because on some islands like Barbados for example, villas there just don’t have much land…your neighbor is literally beside on with the beachfront properties.

Garuda Estate is a short drive into town. Overall I thought it was well maintained, liked the Balinese style and think it would be ideal for the leisure and trendy traveler.

Great lounge in Playa Del Carmen

Diablito is one of my favorite places to grab a drink or even bite to eat before heading out. I was introduced and like their cucumber vodka drink which is refreshing but be warned a few of those and that walk to the washroom will seem challenging.

I was also impressed by the quality of their sushi and sashimi dishes. It’s not the cheapest place to eat but this is expected when you’re in the heart of Playa’s nightlife district. The musique is often good, trendy house tunes but I’ve grown frustrated too many times as neighboring clubs are trying to attract people to their establishments…..picture the cold war but with musique….mine has to be louder than yours. If you really want to listen to Diablitos musique sit inside around the bar.

You can tell that the style hasn’t changed in 30 years (if it was even here 30 yrs ago). I wish they would update their furniture to something a little more modern, comfortable (I love sofas where you can chill for hours) then again why invest more $$$ in a business that’s working right? Locals love it, I love it, do you love Diablito?
