Great lounge in Playa Del Carmen

Diablito is one of my favorite places to grab a drink or even bite to eat before heading out. I was introduced and like their cucumber vodka drink which is refreshing but be warned a few of those and that walk to the washroom will seem challenging.

I was also impressed by the quality of their sushi and sashimi dishes. It’s not the cheapest place to eat but this is expected when you’re in the heart of Playa’s nightlife district. The musique is often good, trendy house tunes but I’ve grown frustrated too many times as neighboring clubs are trying to attract people to their establishments…..picture the cold war but with musique….mine has to be louder than yours. If you really want to listen to Diablitos musique sit inside around the bar.

You can tell that the style hasn’t changed in 30 years (if it was even here 30 yrs ago). I wish they would update their furniture to something a little more modern, comfortable (I love sofas where you can chill for hours) then again why invest more $$$ in a business that’s working right? Locals love it, I love it, do you love Diablito?

Champaign, g strings, house musique, welcome to Mamitas

Mamitas is basically Nikki Beaches twin brother….or the Mexican version. Every time I pass by here I feel obliged to do any one (or all) of the following;

a) where my best tiger stripped Speedo
b) apply copious amounts of baby oil
c) get an ass implant
d) flex

This place is a Mecca for those who love sexiness, house musique, see and be seen if you know what I mean. I’ve tried some of Mamitas sushi dishes which were excellent. The live dj’s make it an ideal place to chill all afternoon. You need to get there early and order (yes pay) for a daybed facing the ocean or settle for daybeds closer to the dj’s / restaurant. You can set up your towel for free but Mamitas gets soooo packed during the day that you can forget about setting up between the day beds…..head to the outskirts.

If you’re having self confidence issues Mamitas might not be the place for you. Or if you haven’t waxed your back, also not a good idea to chill here unless of course you’re a rich guy…..then you can do whatever you want, just keep the Champaign flowing. Word will quickly spread that “the guy with the hairy back drinking Champaign….I heard he’s a movie star”

One of the best beach lounges in Playa Del Carmen

Fusion is located on the more “touristy” side of Playa Del Carmen but make no mistake, this is one of the best places to grab a drink in the evening. I love the low, wooden beach chairs and dim lighting in the evening. If I had to choose a casual beach bar / restaurant to bring a lady too, I think Fusion would top my list.

The restaurant / bar / hotel will often have live bands, dancers, fun entertainment that’s not so loud you can’t hear yourself think. I once made the mistake of choosing the table closest to the water not realizing that as the sun sets the waves creep up on you…..forcing a retreat.

I tried their cerviche which was good and they do offer some nice red wines by the glass. The ladies working here all seem pretty cute which is of course an added bonus :) Then again that’s how it is in Playa, cute girls serving you ice cold beers while chillin on a beautiful beach……way better then being in Montreal during this time of the year!

Where locals hang out

I’ve been back in Playa for a week now and walk by Coffee Café a dozen times….every time there’s always people there, always. I decided to test her out. It’s a Starbucks like café that offers free wifi, your standard selection of coffee’s, cakes, cookies, basically anything to help me gain weight.

Unlike Starbucks though, Coffee Café seems to set itself a part by personal service and choice of house music. It’s un-common for a live dj to spin tunes while you sip away and poke people on Facebook. Oddly enough after sitting there for a few hours and reading peoples logos on their polo shirts (ya, that’s what I do) you get the feeling that the who’s who of Playa like coming here to discuss business.

Coffee Café is a cute place tucked away off 5th Avenue. If you want to meet locals or simply love having good tunes in the background while “working” on your laptop, give this place a try.

One of the best rooftop lounges in Playa Del Carmen

I’ve been to La Azotea a few times; it’s definitely an ideal place for the trendy traveler. Like most trendy lounges, bars, clubs….La Azotea has a clean design, great lighting, and the musique is usually house.

I like the long bar or the 2 day bed type sofas on the smaller upper terrace in back….near the water. It’s a great spot where 2, 3 people can have a conversation, privacy, but you don’t feel like you’re missing out on the evening.

The view at night isn’t bad, it’s on the top floor of the El Punto hotel so you get to see the ocean and people walking along 5th Avenue below. They have a small, very slow elevator that pretty much isn’t worth using unless you want to wait 20 mins to make it up…..just take the stairs, much quicker. If you’re looking to have a drink on one of the better rooftop bars in Playa, try La Azotea.

One of the best restaurants in Playa Del Carmen

Although the current pictures I took don’t do John Gray’s Place justice, this is one of the better restaurants in Playa Del Carmen. Actually, I’m going to come out and say it, John Gray’s Place is one of the best restaurants I’ve tried in the last few years.

Every week for several weeks I would stop by to “The Den” which is the bar across the street from where the restaurant is located. I would watch my favorite hockey team (Montreal Canadians) battle it out in the playoffs while tasting the many dishes offered. It didn’t matter if I tried the sushi, fish, grilled asparagus, everything was delicious! More often than not I would end it with their chocolate brownie and vanilla ice cream. The service was great, the bar has air conditioning but be careful when sitting at the bar…..you don’t want the seats near the small bathroom.

Chef John Gray once sat beside me and we chatted about how he got started etc. Very friendly guy, worked in NY and Vegas and is now in Mexico where he’s opened 3 restaurants. Take your family or lady to John Gray’s Place for a good dinner and I’m willing to bet you’ll come walking out all smiles :)

Good enough for the locals, good enough for me

I like going to El Nativo for their fresh fruit salads and giant 1 liter smoothies. I hate walking there during the day because it’s located in the center of Playa Del Carmen, 30th Avenue and Constituyentes street to be exact.

El Nativo is 100% Naturals competitor and judging by the freshness + variety, El Nativo is winning this battle big time. 100% Natural has the better location (on 5th Avenue) but walk by El Nativo at any given time and you’ll notice that there’s always someone eating….locals too which is to me the no 1 sign you’re business is doing something right.

I managed to pound back half a liter of freshly blended smoothie (couldn’t tell you what it was, the menu was in Spanish but I think I drank some bananas and yogurt) and a whole fruit salad and some guacamole. I felt sick in a good way, I simply ate too much and when the bill came I was all smile….$115 pesos or roughly $10 USD to have eaten like a king.

So overall 2 thumbs up but the location sucks. Try El Nativo and you won’t be disappointed.

Not as fresh as they used ot be

When I first came to Playa I was impressed, I thought 100% Natural was an amazing concept. I’m constantly looking for restaurants that offer good fruit salads with yogurt, or fresh salads, basically anything fresh gets my attention. I’m actually surprised there isn’t 100% Natural restaurants in North America.

I was there recently and after trying another local competitor, I’ve come to the conclusion that this 100% Natural has lost its way. The fruit is no longer as fresh as I remember it being and the smoothies are not as tasteful as the other local restaurants. I still love the concept of fresh, natural fruit dishes on the go at a good price but I’m not impressed by the quality here.

100% Natural is still worth trying, it’s just not the best restaurant in Playa Del Carmen to get your fresh smoothies + fruits salads. You won’t see many locals here and now you know why.

If you can't afford to miss the big game, come here

If you just can’t afford to miss your favorite sports team while on vacation, End Zone Sports Bar (aka EZ Sports) is here to help. Every time I’m in Playa it bothers me that I can’t see the Montreal Canadians play on TV so when I discovered this spot, I was not only happy to see my team play…..but others from Montreal too who needed their hockey fix.

EZ Sports usually plays a few games at any given time. The other night I stopped by to see some hockey (Montreal lost to Colorado) and beside me there was some college football. The service here is quick and efficient….it’s a great place to grab a few beers and mingle with other fans. Walk along Playa Del Carmens 5th avenue and you’ll find EZ Sports….enjoy!

Very casual restaurant offering great value

La Cueva del Chango is just around the corner from where I’m working today so I thought I would stop by. The hostess, whom I recognized from my previous visit this February, greeted me in English. Even though I had been here 3,4 times….I had to double check that I was walking into the right place and not some local guys back yard. This restaurant is very casual, covered in trees (lots of shade is a good thing) and the atmosphere is very casual.

I tried their fully loaded omelet and forgot how greasy the cheese and eggs are. The guacamole was amazing; I’m always excited to come to Mexico for it! The fruit drinks were good, about too warm for me though.

La Cueva del Chango has a very local feel to it, I like the fact that you can come in wearing sandals, shorts, a wet t shirt and get food pretty quickly for a good price. You’ll notice the pond running through the restaurant to the back area where there’s seating for a few couples. Today there were a few people working on their laptops so I’m going to assuming that they have free wifi…..it’s not always easy to get in these parts.

So overall, if you like good value and a laid back atmosphere, give La Cueva del Chango a try. There are a few parking spots in the area and the beach is just down the street which makes for an ideal stop to nap after eating :)

Grab a beer or try Absinthe here

I’ve been to Bily Kun twice this summer, it’s a very down to earth chill place. The bar is located in the Plateau which is where we all know the French babes hang out. The lighting at Bily Kun is very dark so all the girls there look like babes lol

They have a nice selection of beers and Absinthe; yes even Absinthe if you’re feeling adventurous. Now don’t be alarmed, the real Absinthe from Europe is illegal in Canada….something about 70% not being cool.

In the back of the bar you’ll noticed a large, circular sitting area which is perfect if you’re a group. The vibe I get is that Bily Kun is a great place to pack down a few beers before hitting a club….Saturday night is their busiest night.
