My ReviewsClose to town, a fantastic villa for large groups who want luxury.I’ve seen enough villas to know when one of them stands out from the others; Villa Aqua is one of those. Playa Del Carmen has quickly become a top international destination and demand for large, quality private villas is there but few fail to meet expectations. I’ve been fortunate enough to have had dinner here a few times; I haven’t slept over but know it pretty well. The owners are very, very friendly and a pleasure to work with which makes a huge difference. The property is very well maintained and serves as the owners home when guests haven’t booked it. Villa Aqua is operated almost like a small hotel. Each bedroom includes bottles of water, clear options for dialing out, dry cleaning services is needed, etc. Most villas located this close to Playa Del Carmen don’t have large pools or very private back yards; this villa has all of this. The only major draw back is that it’s not on the beach but for some people this is ok….not everyone loves the beach as much as I do. You can walk to the beach though, if I remember correctly it’s about a good 20 min walk. I’m pretty lazy when it comes to this stuff so I would just drive over to the beach. If you’re looking for a high end, private villa in a destination that currently doesn’t have many large and nice villas, Villa Aqua is your place. Oh, did I mention that they have a squash court in case you feel the urge to play at 4 am after pounding back tequila shots with your buddies? Ya, they do :) [Disclosure – I’m a shareholder in Luxury Retreats International which offers Villa Aqua] CleanlinessRoomsAmenitiesValueService

It's so nice to dive when the water is 28 degress celciusI tried Reefers and Wreckers this winter; it’s a local business that’s located in the heart of Speightsown. I did 2 dives which was hilarious. We suit up, get in the boat and I’m expecting a good 20 min boat ride but literally 2 mins later, if that, we’re there! There are 2 dive sites located off Port St. Charles (where I live) and Speightstown. If you’re looking for a group of young guys that are typically bajan, (very chill and easy to get along with) this is your spot. Now I’m not going to lie but the diving in Barbados doesn’t even come close to beating out Thailand (I was certified in Koh phi phi) Belize, New Zealand, or from what I hear, the Red Sea which sounds awesome. But hey…..you’re in Barbados and the water is very warm…..you could get away without wearing a dive suit but I still put on one…..after 40 mins underwater I get cold. Make sure to ask the team at Reefers and Wreckers when they venture out to the largest ship wreck dive in Barbados…”The Stavronikita”. They’ll only trek down to the southern part of the island if there are enough people in the group. Try these guys out and let me know what you think about the diving in Barbados. CommentsRelaxed lounge, very close to nightlifeI’ve been to Café Melies a few times, not recently though. We did have our company Christmas party here which was fun….the restaurant feels very much like a trendy lounge at night. I like its location, right in the middle of St. Laurent which ideal if you want to go out after dinner. The terrace is very small so if you absolutely want to have dinner or a drink outside, make sure to not show up at the last minute. I’m guessing there’s maybe seating for 20 people? I think the strength of Café Melies really lies in its location and relaxed environment. I do recall the presentation of the plates being pretty cool but wasn’t blown away by the food. Actually, I really don’t remember the food….maybe because their drinks were too good? :) TasteCreativityAtmosphereValueService

CommentsGreat on sunny daysOk so Guv and I are here with our wireless Internet writing this live. I’ve been here a few times, the house musique is pretty good and it’s a mainly young professional crowd. I like the fact that there’s a section to tan (upstairs balcony) and if we were here early enough would have tried to score one of those well shaded, wood covered, group benches. I ordered a bloody Cesar which was pretty good. We tried the raspberry mojito pitcher (but with vodka vs rum) and I’m not a huge fan. Kinda annoyed that I couldn’t use my MasterCard to pay (only cash or visa) but word is this is just a temporary problem. Overall it’s been really nice to just sit back and listen to house tunes on this beautiful sunny June 24, 2009. This is perfect for the trendy traveler, anyone who’s in the 20 – 35 age group or people who want to enjoy a good terrace in Old Montreal. SexinessAtmosphereExcitementValueService

CommentsSeeing the show once was good enough for meI will never forget my first Coco Bongo experience in Cancun. I had at this point (November 2004) never seen such a large scale production that mixed live entertainment with music, dancing, all in a club! Since then Coco Bongo has added a club in Playa Del Carmen, albeit a much smaller version. We were there 2,3 months ago and in a way I was a little disappointed. Maybe it’s because I’m older now, or that this club is smaller than the one in Cancun….or maybe I was a little more sober! Either way the all you can drink price is great value for your money and I think it’s something that people should see once…..that’s enough. Coco Bongo features various shows throughout the night, so while you’re dancing boom….lights brighten, special effects kick in high gear and next thing you know it you think you’re watching Michael Jackson live! Just a warning though….lots of locals here are very much into grabbing your hot girlfriend and taking pictures of any skin they see. If I was a single girl I would REALLY watch my drinks, it’s sketchy in this respect. Example….I order a beer, the waiter walks a few steps, sees that a beer lying on a table hasn’t been touched, grabs it and walks back towards me to offer it. No thanks buddy….I was sober enough to see it happen. SexinessAtmosphereExcitementValueService

CommentsCheap and easyI learnt early on in my travels that if a restaurant is full of locals, it has to be good. So Steph and I tried El Fogon and although she seems to like it way more than I do I have to respect the place. These tacos are pretty good, made even better with the hot sauces provided and I’ll sometimes ask for cheese to be added. Wash all of this down with my favorite local beer (Victoria). Now the best part of el Fogon isn’t the chunks of pineapple they serve with the meat, or the real local feel, it’s the bill!! Sometimes cheap and easy is a good thing. CommentsTrendy restaurant to consider in Old MontrealI had a little trouble finding Le Local during my first visit just because it’s tucked away off McGill street. You get the feeling that you’re almost dinning at someone’s house which is cool. Guv and I dropped by last Sunday after soaking up some sun in Old Montreal. I decided to try their onion soup as an entre and ordered the salmon tartar as the main. The selection of local beers and wine list was respectable. Overall though I have to say I really wasn’t impressed with the food. I like my salmon tartar for example freshly chopped up, theirs looked like it was prepared earlier in the day. When I put a fork in my tartars I like seeing the cubes come a part…..I’m not down with wrestling with it to get a mouthful. I liked the service and the fact they had a fully bilingual team. I’ll often purposely speak English during the beginning of a meal at the restaurants I try to see how they respond…..but then go into French mode so I can practice my French. This was my second time at Le Local, the atmosphere and service are the main positive points in my view. I will probably go back again but they need to raise the bar with their food. I know that expectations can sometimes be high in Montreal and I was really hoping that Le Local would meet them…..Try the restaurant and let me know what you think! CommentsShould have tried the Venison Tartar instead - spiced up, I think it is a better option compared to the Salmon Dancing on the beach + all you can drink = good timesEvery time friends come to Barbados to visit, Harbour Lights is a must….even if I feel some nights that at 29 I’m getting to old for it! It’s a basic beach bar that offers a sweet deal….pay $25 USD (guys) / $20 USD (ladies) and it’s all you can drink! In addition to this great deal the real draw is that for us city guys, dancing on the beach under the stars by the ocean is priceless. The big nights here are Wednesdays, Fridays and I’ve heard Sunday nights can be big. Barbados is a small island so on the off nights, Harbour Lights will generally be closed. Take advantage at the end of the night and order a cheeseburger at the back of the bar….one of the best cheeseburgers you can get. Eating a greasy burger helps absorb the copious amounts of alcohol you’ve consumed…..could be a life saver I think the ideal age group for Harbour Lights is 18 to 25ish. If you’re up for some dancing on the beach and want to really take it easy, try Harbour Lights. SexinessAtmosphereExcitementValueService

CommentsPerfect for the trendy travelerI first experienced the W hotel one cold winter night when someone broke into my loft in Montreal….my brother paid for my room and this is how I started with the W. Since then I’ve fallen in love with Starwoods points program and make every effort to not only stay in a W hotel, but a nice Starwood hotel. Ok so let get to the point here….the rooms are on the small side, the service is great, and it’s about as trendy as you can get in Montreal. The décor is dark, the Wunderbar is popular with locals and I would suggest this for the Trendy + Leisure travelers….if you’re seeking a quiet, low key hotel don’t come here. Expect to pay good money to eat here (room service) or at Otto, the restaurant located on the main floor. What really bothers me about these hotels, and not to bash the W, but almost all hotels, is the crazy prices for internet service. I would rather have free internet then free water…..it’s actually more important to me then water! Give me one less pillow and include the internet. Overall I suggest this hotel if you want something trendy in Montreal! CleanlinessRoomsAmenitiesValueService

CommentsI liked going there after work - nice summer spotUpdate: May 30, 2010 Had the Mahi Mahi, thought the portions were a little on the small side but maybe it’s because I’ve grown accustom to large portions in Mexico (just spent 8 months there). I still love their terrace, it’s a nice little place to escape to when the city feels busy. Our old office was right around the corner so Boris Bistro was a place some of us would gather after work to grab a few beers and enjoy just being outside. It has a terrace right in the heart of the business district in Old Montreal which makes for a good spot to try during the summer. Their home fries cooked in duck fat is tasty and salmon tartar is also very good. Overall a cute place, simple, gives those seeking a little fresh air in the city a nice spot to escape too even if it’s just for a beer or two. TasteCreativityAtmosphereValueService

CommentsScarlet - good spot for the trendy travelerI’ve been to Scarlet once and enjoyed my experience there. When we first pulled up in our taxi I thought man, no windows, this place seems sketchy but the moment you walk in you begin to appreciate this trendy little restaurant. The sushi entree was good, they played relaxing music and the dim lighting made for a romantic evening (I was with my lady at that time). The drinks came out quickly and were well presented. Scarlet was one of the few restaurants that stood out in my mind, everything just seemed to work well and I just couldn’t believe that I had driven by this place a million times and didn’t think about trying it out for dinner…..I’m glad I did.
