Milos for Lunch

I’ve been to Milos quite a few times with my family for dinner, but yesterday was the first time I went for lunch for my mother’s bday.
Milos has a complete lunch menu where you choose your starter, main dish, and dessert for $21.00.
We showed up at exactly noon, and there were just a couple of tables filled but by the time we finished at 1:30 the restaurant was almost completely full.

For a pricey restaurant, the lunch menu is great value for the average businessman or group of friends looking to have a nice lunch.

I’m not quite sure whether they mix up the lunch menu every so often, but there were 4 choices for starters and 4 options for main dishes with 2 options for dessert.

I had the greek tomato salad and the tuna burger with zucchini french fries and spicy mayo. Quite tasty but the portions are a little on the slender side…that’s just gluttony kicking in though. The portions are perfect actually!

The best tacos for LUNCH, DINNER & AFTER HOURS!!!

Looking for some quick, cheap and savory tacos? El Fogon is THE PLACE to go. With 3 locations in Playa Del Carmen, one on Constituyentes and 30th avenue, one on 6th and 30th, and the other on 35th in the heart of el Centro, you’ll find a mixture of both locals and tourists devouring their delicious tacos. My favorite are the Tacos Al Pastor con queso, served with Pineapple…mmmm I love the mix of salty and sweet!

If you’re vegetarian, they have a couple of vegetarian dishes – grilled vegetables with Cheese, served with tortillas and veggie Tortas (sandwiches)

And if you’ve been partying to wee hours in the night, there’s nothing like eating some greasy tacos as a preventative cure to the next day hangover. Keep in mind they close at 4 am.

One Of Montreal's best Lebanese Restaurants

I’ve been going to La Sirene since I was about “yay high”….probably since I was about 8 or 10 years old when appetizers were priced at an average of 3$ per dish and 20 years later, they’re priced at an average of $11 per dish! Inflation, Inflation Inflation.

This is definitely not the “trendy” restaurant but caters to more high profile families, so you’re not going to people watch and ambiance but rather just for the quality of the food!

La Sirene has a Seafood market adjoined to the restaurant, so you can pick your own fish for your main dish.

My favorite dishes are: Kibby Neeyeh (raw beef), Tabouleh, Hummus, babaganoush, grilled octopus, fried calamari…etc.

There are now 3 locations – Jean Talon, L’acadie and St. Jean’s (west island)

Delicious Tapas and Cucumber Vodka Drinks!!!

You would think by the decor that this restaurant is stuck in an 80’s tacky time warp but for some reason, with Diablito, this is the TRENDY GO-TO place to go eat and catch up for drinks before heading out to party in the wee hours of the night.

I’ve been to Diablito almost every day of the week, and generally mid-week, you can just show up casually, I normally go in work out clothes and during the weekend nights, you can show up all decked out or again in ripped jeans and over worn t-shirt.

My favorite tapas dishes are the “ Atun Batera” Tacos Diablito (shrimp tacos), House salad, Atun Tostada and Rock Shrimp!! mmm….

If you want a table and couch in the lounge area, you have to make a reservation well in advance and you have to purchase a bottle of alcohol.

Mojo for Dos Ojos (two eyes)

Dos Ojos has to be one of my favorite Cenote snorkeling/diving locations in all of the RM area. Yes, this cenote does cater to tourists but it’s not as commercial as all the other cenote “theme parks”
In case you’re wondering…“what is a cenote” ? It’s a surface waterpool connection to underwater river and cave systems. The cenote water is generally fresh water…and most probably clean enough to drink!

So the protocol with Dos Ojos is you pay for a guide around 40 USD for a good 2 hours, and he’ll take you into the Dos Ojos (two eyes) It’s called TWO EYES, because it has two massive cave systems connected. You can get from one cave to the other if you strap on your diving gear, and dive into the depths of the clear blue abyss.

Depending on your claustrophobic tolerance, you can ask your guide to take you deep into the cave where you have to immerse yourself under water to reach another cave system with limestone formations practically piercing into your head. Of course he’ll take you into areas where it’s pitch black and bats flying closely over your head…it’s a wonderful experience if you’re into that kind of stuff!!

I’ve only been snorkeling in Dos Ojos but I heard the diving is quite amazing because Dos Ojos is one of the deepest cenotes in all of Riviera Maya region. The dives last between 45 – 60 minutes.

This is definitely a site you can’t miss…and a very authentic experience you’ll never forget!!!

The best Italian food in Playa!!!!!!!

I’m fortunate enough to have this restaurant located about 1 minute walking distance from my house. It’s located in a very tranquil area off the beach and a dirt road. The ambiance of the restaurant is exactly that, as if you’re eating in a small remote Italian village, but yet you’re almost in the heart of Playa del Carmen. The Italian music is going, the complimentary meat balls are being served and the waiters…well I haven’t figured out if they’re Mexican or Italian. EIther way the service is phenomenal…the pastas are incredible and the pizza’s are divine. The portions are pretty big….but you definitely have to save room for their signature dessert: Nutella Pizza. You’ll get a fresh piece of dough right out of the oven smeared non-conservatively with mounds of Nutella and two gi-normous scoops of Ice cream…slowly melting and seeping into the Nutella spread. God…. it’s more pleasurable than having sex!!!!!!

Keep your eyes peeled for a brand new Pummarola opening up on 12th and 1st street, right in the heart of Playa’s nightlife.

Chido Aguachiles!

Ok so by looking at the main picture, you’re probably thinking…ummmm..yeahh…no thanks!
But in fact you are SUPER CHIDO (COOL) and IN with the locals if you go and eat at AguaChiles.
Take note that the restaurant hours are from 12:30 – 6:30 pm, so it’s really more of a lunch place. I’m assuming the brief restaurant hours are to maintain freshness at the restaurant. All the fish and seafood are super fresh and tasty. You can also choose the extent of spicyness when ordering the type of sauce to top your aguachiles and ceviches. Just in case you’re wondering “aguachiles” is a popular mexican dish that entails raw shrimp, spicy sauce and lots of lime juice!!! Very healthy and apparently very good for La cruda (hangovers!)
Ok so the best part in my opinion…is the dessert. You can either choose between homemade Flan or Chamoy covered apples…..mmmmmmmm absolutely decadent!!!!!! I’m salivating right now as I type this.

Best Restaurant in Playa!!!

I’ve been to this restaurant about 6 times and I have to say it still remains my favorite restaurant in all of Playa. That’s quite a statement considering Playa boasts many impressive restaurants.
From the moment you’re hosted to your table, to the instant you get up to leave, the service at this restaurant is unsurpassed excellence! The wine selection is more than ample and the food is just sensational.

My favorite main dish is the black cod….it’s like butter that melts in your mouth…mmmm. I’m salivating as I write this review.

Also, be aware of the surprise intricate sample little tasters compliments of the chef. The element of surprise, definitely helps contribute to this restaurant’s excellent reputation.

The food is a little on the expensive side, but still well worth the experience!!!

Episodes at Blue Parrot

Playa Del Carmen attracts tourists mostly from Europe, South and Central America, Mexico and now starting to migrate to this rustic/trendy town are North Americans, and Blue Parrot is THE SPOT for American tourists looking to wind and grind with the each other and the local mexicans!! The music varies from latin rock, hip hop, reggaeton and reggae and you can dance the night away on the dance floor located on the beach, or swing the night away, on their fun swings for seats by the bar.

You can also listen to techno, house and dance music at the other dance floor located inside the bar.

Here’s a quick tip for the guys: If it’s open bar for women, don’t try to cheat by asking your girlfriend or lady friends to get a drink for you. My brother got caught recently taking a free drink from his lady friend, and ended up getting in a fight with the bar manager. Within minutes, he had a mob of 10 security guards jumping my 6’6” brother for innocently taking a sip of the drink! He also had a security guard break a beer bottle on his head and was instantly hemorrhaging!!! SO FYI…also stay away from the security as they tend to be overly aggressive for nothing!!!!

Kiteboarding in Paradise

The first time I saw Kiteboarding was the first time I set foot in Playa del Carmen two years ago, and I was determined to be out on the water. It was only about a 2 months ago when I really had the time to take a couple of courses, and Freestyle Playa came highly recommended by a friend of mine. The school is set up on one of Riviera Maya’s most serene beaches, Xpu Ha (about 20 min drive south from Playa), and not only is the beach incredible and quite secluded, but the instructors are fantastic. They make sure to take all the safety precautions and go at the pace and comfort level of the student.
Jacob was my instructor and wouldn’t trade him for the world but I know all the other instructors are equally talented and worth taking lessons with.
Unfortunately, I’ve been so cooped up with work that I didn’t get to finish my classes, and now I have to wait for the next windy season which will start up again in November.
