Auberge du Vieux-Port
Montreal | $$$ | Website
With an Old Port location most hotels would kill for and the charm of Old World Europe, the Auberge du Vieux Port is a great choice for those who are lured to Montreal for its romantic reputation. Indeed, its mostly king suites make couples (or a pair of very close friends) the ideal visitors for the Auberge, built in 1882. The hotel's designers were careful to preserve the original heritage of the building, leaving hardwood floors, heavy wood beams, exposed brick walls and great towering windows. If you're lucky enough to get a room facing the river, the windows open up to an amazing view that's a rarity for hotels in the area.
It's clear that the owners of this hotel wanted guests to feel a real sense of "Auberge" (that's French for an inn). The Vieux-Port is cozy to a T, from the plush beds to the breakfast room downstairs, featuring a section of the city's original fortification walls. A few fun things to mention: soft-playing jazz greets guests as they walk into their room, and the hotel offers a complimentary wine and cheese at 5. Both très Montreal.

Great location in Old Montreal
The Auberge du Vieux-Port feels a bit like a luxury farmhouse. And I mean that in a good way. I visited the hotel in September, 2008, and remember thinking that it would be great for a honeymoon or romantic getaway. With its antiquey look, I couldn’t necessarily picture a young and super trendy couple wanting to crash here, though just about everyone would appreciate its attentive service. If you want to explore the Old Port and are visiting in the summer, you pretty much can’t beat the location right along the main road parallel to the river.
