Fairmont The Queen Elizabeth
Montreal | $$$ | Website
When you're saddled with the grande reputation of Montreal's landmark Queen Elizabeth Hotel, it takes that extra something to impress. Luckily, this 50-year-old hotel has that something in spades, from its muted main lobby to the uniqueness of its rooms to the sense of Canadiana found within the walls of its famed Beaver Club restaurant.
Elegant and understated, the Queen Elizabeth isn't the place for trendy jetsetters, but travelers who appreciate tradition and old world service. The feeling inside is hushed, with rooms decorated in warm browns and greens. If you appreciate great views, ask for a room facing west, where the dome of the neighboring basilica rises to meet the hotel's upper floors. Though royalty and dignitaries have stayed throughout its 1037 rooms, history lovers will want to book #1742, the large suite where John Lennon and Yoko Ono held their 1969 Bed-in and recorded "Give Peace a Chance". This is also a hotel built for convenience, in a very central location with links to the underground city, metro and train stations.

You definitely get a feeling of old worldliness and history
It’s quite a shame that The Queen Elizabeth looks a bit drab and austere from the outside (unlike it’s other Fairmont siblings in Canada, like the Royal York and the Chateau Laurier), because inside the hotel, you definitely get a feeling of old worldliness and history. I visited the hotel in October 2008 during the labor strike, so there wasn’t as much staff as usual, but even then you can tell that it’s a place that prides itself on service. If you’re looking for something young and trendy, bypass the QE. But, in my opinion, it would be great for upscale business types, 35+ leisure travelers and anyone who can appreciate the golden years of the large railway hotel.
