Hotel Gault
Montreal | $$$ | Website
You know a hotel just has that special something when it makes you feel cooler the instant you walk in. Sure, the big, dimmed lobby of five-year-old Hotel Gault is plastered with wacky artwork and funky furniture in rainbow hues. Yes, the staff seems genuinely friendly. Of course, there is jazzy music playing, the kind you wished you knew the name of so you could download it immediately. Mostly though, the feeling of "cool" comes from the hotel's inconspicuous spot in a historic building on an Old Montreal corner. You don't even notice that the Hotel Gault is there until you cross through the doors and feel like you've stumbled into some secret, Alice-in-Wonderland bastion of style.
Things only get better upstairs. This is a big "D" design hotel, through and through, so rooms are as far from cookie-cutter as possible. Worth mentioning first is their size – colossal, even as far as boutique suites go. No two are the same, but soaring ceilings and windows are common, as are light wood paneling (very Scandinavian spa-like) and big soaker tubs for two. Floors are soft concrete, but heated in the bathrooms. This is the place for people who've done trendy and crazy and just want a perfect blank canvas on which to paint their Montreal vacation.

.....had me saying "wow"
I’ve seen a lot of hotels in Montreal, and I can’t think of another one that had me saying “wow” around every corner. This hotel is simply beautiful and different from anywhere else I’ve stayed. Rooms aren’t so much rooms as spaces. I loved the way they were kind of empty but still felt cozy, with huge beds and soft carpets. Calm and quiet – it’s somewhere I can picture hiding away for a weekend with my boyfriend. I took a half point off in the amenities category only because the hotel doesn’t provide iPod docks in the rooms (!), but apparently those are on the way. Just go to Gault.
