Hotel Le St. James

Old Montreal | $$$$ | Website

Just seven years since its grand opening in 2002, Hotel Le St. James has quickly shot up the ranks to become the top-rated hotel in the entire province of Quebec. This prestigious address in the heart of Old Montreal is the preferred hideout for international elite, Hollywood celebs, F1 drivers and rock stars, including the Rolling Stones, who commandeered all 60 of the hotel's rooms and suites during a recent tour.

Touring the halls of the hotel, converted from a late 18th century bank, it's not hard to understand the allure. Le St. James epitomizes European elegance, bathrooms filled with marble and beds swathed in Frette linens. Every room and suite is different, decorated with the hotel owner's personal art and antique collection and pieces sourced from around the world. If it sounds like a fantasy, it is. But it's a modern one. This is a place that still celebrates the custom of afternoon tea, yet offers plasma TVs, Bang and Olufsen sound systems, iPod docks and a fully stacked convention room for corporate travelers.

Check out the cool underground spa room.

For a hotel that’s only been open a few years, Hotel Le St. James feels like it’s been around forever. Maybe it’s the fancy antiques or the unfailingly old-world service. I’ve never stayed at Le St. James, but visited recently, and was as impressed as the hotel’s reputation implied I might be. Stuffed with art, gilded in gold, lacquered in heavy wood and twinkly chandeliers, admittedly, Le St. James might not be the modern hipster’s cup of afternoon tea style-wise, but I don’t know anyone who wouldn’t feel just a little bit royal walking around here. Check out the cool underground spa room, which is walled with portions of the city’s original fortifications.
