Hotel Nelligan

Old Montreal | $$$$ | Website

Named for a famous French-Canadian poet, the Hotel Nelligan certainly does feel a bit poetic in feel — elegant, a bit quirky at times, but just all-around lovely. The center of this Old Port mainstay is its bright atrium, a spot devoted to showcasing up and coming Quebec artists while guests, and locals, enjoy a drink, snack and good conversation. A few of the hotel's suites actually look over the atrium with tiny, European-style balconies.

Spread over two sections, the original hotel plus a newer addition, the Nelligan's rooms are a mix of contemporary and classy, with either brown and red or beige and blue color palettes playing off the very Montreal element of exposed brick walls. Paying homage to its namesake, there are also snippets of Nelligan poetry framed throughout. While understated, service and ambiance makes the Nelligan a home run choice for a simple, classy stay in the Old Port.

A boutique hotel worth staying at....loved those comfortable beds!

I’ve stayed in the Nelligan twice and usually stop by a few times during the summer to grab a bite to eat at Verses Sky, their rooftop restaurant. What I remember best about the Nelligan is how comfortable their beds were….maybe it’s because both times when I decided to stay there I was out partying late so they seemed “extra” comfortable but I loved them. I’m also a big fan of boutique hotels that have exposed brick walls, so much so when I purchased a loft in Montreal I made sure it also had exposed brick.

The hotel is in the heart of Old Montreal so you’re within walking distance to several art galleries, restaurants, and of course place Jacques Cartier which is always nice to see…..even if it’s a tourist thing to do  The staff was friendly but I was very disappointed to have to pay full fare when I checked in one late night after a snow storm (and yes, I was drinking….our company party took place at the hotel) and didn’t want to drive home. It was 3 am……I guess rules are rules but man, you would think I would have received a discount after we hosted our company party there! So I paid and took 2 apples….not one.

Overall, a great boutique hotel and I would suggest this to trendy, middle class and maybe the business traveler who wants to be near some Old Montreal action but yet not too far from where most conferences are held. Enjoy your stay!

PS. Make sure that you don’t book a room near the rooftop terrace during the summer, gets busy with restaurant clients and the hallways are small.

Great Hotel and Great Roof Top Terrace

While living in Montreal I have not stayed at all the hotels but when there are friends coming into town and they feel as if they are intruding my place they ask me which hotel that I would recommend. This one would be on the top of my list. The location and service as well as restaurant all cater to a special kind of taste. If you want to get great service, live in Luxury and Yes those beds are great I would say spend at least one long weekend at this Hotel.

The rooms were decently sized and very clean. I spent a night in the Suite and that was to die for, if you have the extra cash and I would suggest at least 1 night in that suite, no music or party is too loud and you can basically do whatever you want! Which while on vacation is the best words you can hear!

The first you notice is the cool, homey lobby atrium.

I was duly impressed by the Nelligan when I visited (with no overnight stay) in September, 2008. The first thing you notice about the hotel is its cool, homey downstairs area, which includes the atrium — a great spot for an after-work drink. Rooms were on the softer, but high quality side. It’s probably because the Nelligan caters to an “older” crowd…say 35 and up. This feels like the place to stay when you have money, but are over that showy stage and just want to get the best for your top dollar. Ps – if you’re there in the summer, don’t miss the chance to have a drink on the very happening Sky Terrace.
