Le Saint Sulpice

Montreal | $$$$ | Website

Right in the heart of Old Montreal and adjacent to the Notre Dame Cathedral sits the inviting four-star and four-diamond, Saint-Sulpice Hotel. Part of the Resort One family, this boutique hotel is housed in a government protected historic fur warehouse. There is evidence of the buildings history in each of the Sulpice’s five meeting rooms with cache’s such as brick walls, old beam supports and stone wall facades.

The Sulpice has a classic look that is luxurious; pairing a modern edge with a historic feel. All suites have sofa beds and a fully equipped kitchenette including a hot plate (rare for hotels). The hotel is currently upgrading to granite countertops and flat screen TV’s. Some suites have fireplaces or balconies; both if you are lucky. Bathrooms are large and have sexy frosted glass showers or windows exposed to the sleeping room. The suites are comfortable with neutral tones, windows that open wide and genuine paintings on the walls. The two large presidential suites have gorgeous terrace balconies overlooking the old port of Montreal – perfect for entertaining.

Besides serving an elaborate continental breakfast, the popular restaurant S offers French-inspired contemporary cuisine and an impressive wine cellar. The gem of this hotel is their quiet private garden courtyard that is an extremely popular spot for drinks or brunch in the summertime. 80% of the hotel’s 108 suites have an inner courtyard view. The Essence Health Centre sports fairly up-to-date cardio equipment and free weights. The gym is larger and brighter than other boutique hotels but the stone wall that has been painted green seems an odd fit to the rest of the hotel’s historic caches. Massage therapists and estheticians are on call for any beauty or relaxation needs.

Great Location in Old Montreal

I found the hallways of this hotel to be dark, stuffy and tired; the red carpets with gold “fleurs de lys” were tacky but the suites were bright, chic and spacious. As equipped as a furnished apartment, I can see why many choose the Sulpice for longer stays. I think the best part of the hotel is the summer garden terrace. It is peaceful and private but also a great spot for a social drink.
