Pierre du Calvet
Old Montreal | $$$$ | Website
Step into the 18th century at Pierre du Calvet, a historic residence turned hotel located in Montreal’s cobblestoned Old Port. Originally built in 1725, the hotel began as a family mansion, expanded to include ground-floor commerce in the 1800s, and was eventually taken over by the Trottier family in the 1960s, one of whom still owns and runs the hotel. If you’re a visitor to Montreal, there is officially no place older or perhaps more Old-World hospitable – thanks to Gaetan Trottier himself – to stay in the city.
Pierre du Calvet offers just 9 rooms, each regally decorated with huge four-posted beds, Persian rugs, heavy antiques, art and fireplaces. This may as well be France, circa 1750. The entire hotel is dark and moody, with lots of little twists and turns, mysterious doors and windows to nowhere (a product of three centuries worth of renovations), plus three spaces devoted to dining on the inn’s well-known French cuisine. The only modern concession at PDC is the solarium in the lobby. Here, you can sit with a coffee or breakfast with the owner’s parrots and doves, who will chat with you and maybe even teach you some French.
If you’re the type to get lost in historic novels, or like hotels described as “quaint” and “charming”, this is the place for you. It would be a perfect little honeymoon getaway in this already romantic city. Not recommended for trendier travelers, or anyone who likes their hotels stocked with super-modern amenities.

I can see some people loving it and others, not so much.
It’s tough to rate this unique spot. I can see some people (couples wanting romance, history lovers, etc.) LOVING it, and others (trendy youngsters, techies, etc.), not so much. I visited Pierre du Calvet in early 2009 and got lost in the history and ambiance of the place, with its really old, woody feeling and fantasyland kind of layout. You really do feel like you’re transported back to another time, especially given its location, which is perfect for someone that wants to spend time wandering around the old city. I wouldn’t recommend it for the winter though, when the area really slows down, or for anyone who really loves the modern look, because this is the exact opposite!
