St. Paul Hotel

Old Montreal | $$$$ | Website

In a world filled with bland hotel rooms and cookie-cutter furniture, St. Paul stands out like a breath of fresh air. This design hotel at the crossroads of Montreal's Old Port and financial district is fun, funky and fresh, all at the same time — the perfect little spot for business travelers with a flair for something different.

Divided into "Fire" and "Ice" floors, each room at the hotel plays on colors drawn from the local landscape, with lots of beiges, greys and browns, though the overall effect is certainly not blah. There are touches of white alabaster everywhere, starting with the massive fireplace in the lobby, and kitschy little touches like moose-head lanterns in the elevators. To nitpick, some rooms may be on the small side, but their unique design features usually make up for it. The hotel is also more than walking distance from the party scene downtown, but you may well be entertained enough by the good-looking locals who frequent the hotel bar at happy hour (called the cinq a sept, or 5 to 7, in Montreal) and the restaurant in the evening.

Like something ripped from a design magazine.

St. Paul’s rooms are like something ripped right out of a design magazine. I visited recently and stayed a few years ago, so I’ve seen a few different suites, and each one has been really cool and unique in its own way. Some have gauzy curtains around the bed and some have these super-funky rose couches. Overall, I didn’t quite get the whole “Fire and Ice” idea that the hotel’s design apparently adheres to, though the whole scheme works really well regardless. The bar on the main floor is a must-see, especially when the locals roll in for drinks after work. I can see some cool young couples staying here or a trendy young businessman. Kids would probably feel out of place.

Chic and Simple

I have stayed at the St. Paul twice and both times I was not disappointed. Best memories at the St. Paul include playing cards at the table in the Deluxe Suite listening to Christmas Carols, taking a long bath in the huge tub (room for 2), or jumping on the bed in the colourful Superior Room and still not being able to touch the ceiling!

The breakfast is included in the room rate and it is delicous. Go for the cheese and fresh fruit with your croissant and fresh coffee.

The St. Paul is located near everything in Old Montreal and it is also very close to the Square Victoria Metro making it easy to access the city. There are also several Bixi bike stations around the hotel.

If you are not staying at the hotel, drop in to see the gorgeous fireplace in the lobby and stay for a drink at Vauvert – especially on a Thursday night after work. It is often packed with gorgeous, well-dressed yuppies.

I love the hotels location too, close to a few great restaurants in Old Montreal.
