Laika

Montreal | $$ | Website

Laïka is a meeting spot for the media and arts community, located on Boulevard St-Laurent right in the heart and soul of Montreal. A café, restaurant, lounge, bar and working space all in one, Laïka serves up delicious food and drinks at an affordable price in an cozy, relaxing atmosphere with great music, 18 hours a day, 7 days a week. Still fresh after 10 years, the name Laïka pays tribute to the legendary Russian dog who became the first Earthling to travel into space.

Tribe + Vibe

Frequented (and staffed!) by locals and visitors to Montreal from the creative worlds of photography, music, fashion, multimedia, cinema, dance, theatre, design and literature, an inspiring blend of people cross paths at Laïka.

As far as food is concerned, Laïka serves its plats-du-jour at noon, tapas at night, and on the weekends its famous brunch; with all ingredients fresh from the market.

Sounds like

When Laïka opened its doors in 1999, electronic music was just starting to gain momentum in clubs and after hours. Montreal became a hot bed for many North American artists, notably with the emergence of the Mutek festival. Many of these artists began by playing at Laïka: Akufen, Deadbeat, Frivolous, The Mole and many other artists who are currently cutting up Berlin while new talents follow in their footsteps. Producers from cult labels like Perlon, Kompakt, and Scape, Musique Risquée and other micro-labels spin everything from Tech-House to Minimal-House with a deep sense of the roots common to both... Enjoy.

Chill place on St. Laurent

I like Laikas casual atmosphere. The prices are good, I’ve been here 2,3 times before heading further south on St. Laurent to dance. I’m a huge fan of good house musique which is very tough to find in Montreal (or maybe I just haven’t found the right spots) but the DJ’s here will spin a mixture of chill / house tunes. I need to stay here a whole night to enjoy the music but I get the vibe that people come here to grab a drink or too vs. dancing away. It’s small, casual artsy, beer is cheap, and there’s house tunes….thumbs up Laika.
