Rouge

Montreal | $$

“Red” hot on the Montreal nightclub scene for several years now, Rouge owes its legs to great music, decent prices and a fantastic location on the corner of the Main and Prince Arthur. This classic spot doesn’t do anything fancy – it is way unaffected compared to some other clubs down the block – just ensures you have a good time alongside a cross-section of Montreal’s beautiful people, plus a handful of tourists thrown in for good measure.

Rouge is a 25 and over club in name, and though they don’t check I.D., the vibe is definitely a bit more mature. That’s a good thing for late-twentysomethings who don’t want to spend their evening bumping and grinding with the teenage set, plus it makes the DJ’s job a bit easier, with a crowd just as eager to move to today’s hits as they are to the top 20s from the late 90s. Choose between the upstairs hip-hop crowd or a more classic mix of dance tunes (think Kanye West, followed by AC/DC, followed by JET) downstairs, depending on your mood.

    Dance away baby

I’ve been to Rouge many times, maybe too many. I respect the no sausage party rule which means if you show up with a bunch of guys, there’s a 95% chance you won’t make it in. It’s an older crowd, 23 – 30ish and people here are generally pretty laid back.

The music bounces around, a variety that will make most people happy. It can get pretty busy but there’s usually enough room to dance….head upstairs for more room. Getting a booth usually isn’t a problem if you show up early and order a bottle minimum.

Rouge in my mind is an older version of Tokyo, it’s not too fancy, a solid average if that makes any sense? Maybe it’s because my true love is more house music, open air clubs we see in Playa, Budapest, etc….but if you’re coming to Montreal and you want to mingle with locals, this is a good spot. Oh…..did I tell you that women in Montreal are beautiful?

Some negative points to consider…..they often want people to pay cash which is ridiculous in my opinion. The bathrooms are tiny as hell, there’s nothing more awkward then peeing with a wasted guy swaying close to you…..touching your arm…..and poor ladies, there’s always a massive line up. Overall though, try it and let me know how your night out at Rouge went.

    Pure Party Review #6

I have been going to Rouge for quite a long time now and still feel the excitment each time I walk in the door. Rouge, which is located on the Main (st Laurent) is one of those bars where no matter what music you listen to you are sure to hear a favorite song of yours. You can always expect to hear the claissic Daft Punk, top 40 and a little rock in there as well.
I will have to agree with everyone else. The place really packs in the people, it takes 15 mins to walk from one side to the bar to the other. People are always hitting you and it takes forever to get a drink….so If I were you I think I would take my chances at any other bar on St Laurent, in one night you can easily make your way to quite a few, follow the skirts…lol

    Overrated

Always a pain in the butt when trying to get in Rouge, because unless you’re a guy with at least 3 girls, you won’t get in for a while, unless you’re on the guest list of course. When I go I’m usually on the top floor which for the most part plays the same music every night! It’s over-crowded and the drinks are still pretty expensive. I don’t know why that many people go, cause you can’t dance much without getting elbowed or pushed around, but hey, everyone has their own taste!

The one good thing is, every time I’ve gone there hasn’t been any cover charge which helps. Overall, I only go if there’s already a group of friends there, and no where else on St. Laurent.

    Put on your dancing shoes

You know those songs that you belt your heart to as you’re driving on the highway on a nice summer day? Well Rouge is the place you dance to those same tunes! I like to go on the first floor for the laid back older crowd who aren’t shy to dance the night away. Everyone is friendly and you’ll often find yourself mingling and dancing to the group beside you. I find the 2nd floor tends get really hot and sweaty… not in a good way. And why dance to top 40 when you can rock to some classic 80’s and 90’s!? And like others have said… ladies don’t drink too much or you’ll spend half the night in line.

Rouge or should I say Red?

Rouge…..Red it is. The inside is dark and lighted only with red light-bulbs but the music is ALWAYS good and everyone is always ready for a good time.

The one thing that I really like about this club is that it isn’t cheesy. No girl likes to go to a place where the guys are pretentious and have the ‘line’ ready for you – the one they have rehearsed and tried time and time again and think will work on you! Instead, this place is laid back and people are just there to drink, dance and have a good time so you can talk to the guy next to you without really having to dread ‘the pick-up line’.

The main floor plays classics from the 80s and 90s like Bon Jovi and Bel Biv Devoe while hip hop reigns upstairs.

The age group is good – at least I don’t feel ancient when I set foot there :) Although the one thing I can’t do is pay a cover charge so unless I am on the guest list, you can pretty much count me out! And waiting in their line-up is strictly out of the question. I didn’t wait when I was 18, so I am certainly not about to wait now at 29!!!

But overall, Rouge/Red, is a good time.

    Always a fun time...

It’s addictive! The music is good, the crowd is laid back, the staff is cool! It can get very crowded, and coat check is not fun in the winter, but it won’t stop you from going back the following weekend..

    Red Hot....

If you’re going to try to get into Rouge here is my advice:
1 – Be a hot chick or 2 – Be ready to act like you own the place
As Jazz mentioned – they have a strict no sausage party rule which I too respect. Montreal is known for having some of the most beautiful women and as such attracts a lot of men who come to seeks them out in our clubs. The problem is the men usually outnumber the women 4-1 and this can make the clubs just that….a sausage fest. Rouge is good about allowing all women in without waiting in line and shamlessly make the fellas wait in line. In my past experience you can get in if you tag along with some women or act as if you own the joint. I usually walk up with a group of 3/4 guys (a general no no at Rouge) and have a 20 folded into my right hand for the special hand-shake. This has never failed but you have to be confident and know that it will work.
The cool thing about Rouge is that they place great music for all ages. On the main floor you have the best dance hits of the 70’s / 80’s and 90’s. If you go upstairs to the top floor they are playing the more modern tracks but this also attracts a much younger crowd.
My recommendation is to stick to the main floor – and hang out at the back bar. There is less traffic and its the best spot to dance in small or large groups.
Try to avoid coat check because it will take forever at the end of the night to get you jacket!
Enjoy and I hope you dance like Lionel Richie….ALL NIGHT LONG!
