Bistro Cocagne

Montreal | $$$ | Website

Many people know Bistro Cocagne as the old location of the renowned Relais and Châteaux restaurant, Toqué! Well situated in the trendy plateau area on St. Denis Street, Cocagne’s head chef, Alexandre Loiseau, happens to be a former sous-chef at Toqué!, and he’s certainly transferred some of the magic from the former occupant to this new venture. Using a similar formula of market fresh, local ingredients, plus great service by knowledgeable staff and a touch of creativity, Bistro Cocagne consistently delivers delicious meals in a charming ambience. This intimate restaurant is simply decorated with dark wood, neutral colours, mirrors and Canadiana feel without being kitchy.

Portion sizes are surprisingly large and menu prices reasonable. The $36 menu includes an appetizer and main or, for $42, the addition of dessert. Try such specialties as the duck breast ravioli with caramelized onions, mushroom jus and white truffle oil, or the unbelievable fresh fish of the day, with mashed Jerusalem artichokes and bok choy.

Bistro Cocagne appeals to the luxury traveler looking for excellent food prepared by a skilled chef; to the trendy traveler who enjoys creative meals and seeing and being seen in the chic plateau area; and to the middle class traveler who is willing to spend a little extra for great food, service and ambience.

Hot Spot on the Plateau and Surprisingly Good Value

I had wanted to try Bistro Cocagne for a very long time! The restaurant was noisy because it was so busy with couples and groups of Christmas revelers. But the service was great (cute French waiter!) and the food was so tasty that I was still impressed! I was surprised at the bill for two- $160 for wine and a great meal. I will definitely go back to Bistro Cocagne. I think it is the perfect spot for a romantic date or a fun night out with friends.
