Boris Bistro
Old Montreal | $$ | Website
Spare, chic and trendy, Boris Bistro is one of a handful of nouveau eclectic menu restaurants to spring up along McGill Street, halfway between the downtown core and Old Montreal. With a menu that's short on food selection but long on alcohol, including a great wine list, you know it's going to be a good night. Served by a friendly and trendy staff, dishes are satisfying if not spectacular, but most diners should find something to suit their palate.
But where Boris Bistro really shines in the summertime, when the restaurant empties onto a big, innovatively designed terrace that's accessible from a converted stone façade right on the street. It's not scientifically possible that the drinks and food taste better under the sun, but it sure feels like it.

I liked going there after work - nice summer spot
Update: May 30, 2010
Had the Mahi Mahi, thought the portions were a little on the small side but maybe it’s because I’ve grown accustom to large portions in Mexico (just spent 8 months there). I still love their terrace, it’s a nice little place to escape to when the city feels busy.
Our old office was right around the corner so Boris Bistro was a place some of us would gather after work to grab a few beers and enjoy just being outside. It has a terrace right in the heart of the business district in Old Montreal which makes for a good spot to try during the summer. Their home fries cooked in duck fat is tasty and salmon tartar is also very good. Overall a cute place, simple, gives those seeking a little fresh air in the city a nice spot to escape too even if it’s just for a beer or two.

Nice in the summer
I’ve eaten at Boris Bistro several times and had drinks on their terrace a few more than that, and it’s definitely the latter where the restaurant offers something different. The food is pretty good, but munching on something out on that terrace feels great in the summertime, especially with pitcher of sangria (I’ve had red and white – both good) sitting in front of you! If you want to go have an icy drink in a cool spot, definitely check it out. For a random dinner indoors, there are other places I’d recommend first.
