Cafe Titanic

Old Montreal | $ | Website

It might be a bit tough to find, tucked into a semi-basement in a little corner of Old Montreal, but once you've found it, Titanic sure rewards. This breakfast and lunch café (it closes for dinner) is a bastion of big, fresh sandwiches, innovative salads and gooey desserts, all served in a friendly, nautically themed space. Always busy with Montrealers on their breaks, it's a great place to get a feel for the city and its quirkiness. Water is served in wine bottles and there are big black and white photos of the staff covering its walls.

Prices are on the high side at Titanic, but its fresh food rarely misses: the pickle and cheese sandwich and marinated chicken breast are equally mouthwatering. Order at the counter and bring it to your table – which may be a large communal bar or a teeny bistro corner for two – but no matter where you sit, Titanic is a great place to chat, refuel and people-watch. Remember, it's cash or credit cards only!

Pure Party Restaurant Review #1

Titanic, what great things I can say about this place. While I was working in Old Montreal, this little restaurant was the place to go. The food, style and service was always classy and a Not To Miss while walking around Old Montreal on a nice day. The Sandwhiches were very big, decenlty prices and always top quality. I think everyone who steps into this little trendy place will enjoy the atmosphere and the smile that you will get once you get your hands on one of those juicy chicken Sandwhiches!

Fresh and hearty fare, plus cool communal dining.

I’ve been to Titanic many times over the years, and I’ve yet to order something that disappointed. Everything is so fresh and so hearty, which is a treat considering its relaxed cafeteria style. I love the way the restaurant is laid out so that you may share a big table with strangers – don’t worry, you get used to it – and it feels like you’ve invaded a friend’s big, warm dining room. The only knock I would give it is that many of the sandwiches, which could easily be split with a friend, are so big that they’re a bit hard to eat.

Rated by enRoute Magazine (Air Canada) as “best sandwiches in Montreal” I must agree.

It may not be fancy, although it has character. Established in 1989, the Titanic Lower Deck restaurant theme begins as you walk down the stone wall basement stairway entering through a door with a porthole window. The weathered hardwood floors and brick walls make a statement, setting the mood as jazz music accompanies this very friendly ambiance. The menu selection would please any health conscious individual and those who seek out Mediterranean specialties. All menu choices are with a generous amount of fresh herbs as their ingredients. I like their antipasto misto combo, sandwich accompanied with a mixture of roasted and grilled vegetables. The sandwich repertoire is great and always changing; pink salmon on crusty bread; smoked Mackerel; roast pork chutney… The presentation has a creative touch. I must say they have a limited selection of deserts, but the almond cake topped with cream cheese icing, worth every bite. If you are a coffee lover like me, there is nothing better than a cappuccino to complete a meal.

The restaurant is open from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. weekdays therefore; arriving between 12:00 and 1:30 p.m. you will encounter your local businesses lunch hour rush. Anytime later you can enjoy a quiet and relaxed time. Its location is southwest of Old Montreal. Two blocks down you can benefit by visiting the various art exhibition shops on the well known “rue St-Paul”. Perhaps a stop at Montreal’s nearby Museum of Archaeology and History at “Pointe-à-Caillière”. Besides the food being delicious, the area of its location can be interesting to explore.

Tasty Sandwiches and Chocolate Cake to Die For!

I consider myself lucky to work in Old Montreal where I am able to have fabulous lunches at places like Titanic. Sandwichs at the store are $9.95 each and could easily feed two for a light lunch. My favorites are the Cubano which is marinated roast pork or the brie and tomato with pesto. Others rave about the chicken sandwich. There is always great coffee and little desserts if you have a sweet tooth (the petit pot de chocolate is unbelievable).
We often order from Titanic for working lunches and it always impresses clients. The antipasto plate is great with marinated roasted vegetables and all of the sandwiches are cut to small sizes to be shared.
But I have to say that what knocks me out everytime is when we order the chocolate cake. It is so moist and the icing puddles around and into the hole in the center of the bundt shaped cake. WOW. This is the kind of cake that grown adults come away from looking like a kid who just savoured their favorite chocolate bar, melted all over their face. Just try to resist.
