Chez L'Epicier
Old Montreal | $$$ | Website
The name of this restaurant literally translates to “at the grocer’s”. Chez L’Épicier is simple, with an old general store atmosphere to it; gourmet sauces, jams, olives, etc. line the shelves at the entrance. Located directly across from Montreal’s historic Marché Bonsecours, it also has a European bistro feel with exposed stone walls, a chalkboard menu and large bare windows overlooking the narrow cobblestoned streets.
Acclaimed Montreal chef Laurent Godbout (Version, Duel) has created a relaxed space with delectable and distinctive meals. The menu often changes according to season and the chef’s taste. A popular spot for business lunches, the table d’hôte menu is good value with a choice of starter, a main and coffee or tea with a price range of $15 to $30.
The middle class traveler will appreciate the reasonable value for the quality of cuisine; however we would recommend only visiting during lunch, as dinner menu prices increase a great deal. The trendy traveler will want to visit for a nice lunch or a casual dinner; a great spot for a first date – not too fancy, but with excellent food and a romantic location for an after dinner stroll. The luxury traveler will be pleased with the quality of food and the attentive but not overbearing service.
Labeling itself as a place of “relaxed refinement”, Chez L’Épicier is a trendy hot spot in Old Montreal that is great as an unpretentious spot for locally-inspired fare.

Excellent Old Montreal restaurant
I’ve been to Chez L’Epicier a few times as our old office was located just down the street. The restaurant is located about a block East of the heart of Old Montreal, the Jacques Cartier square where people gather in the summer to pound back a few beers on one of the many terraces. You’ll often see business travelers here for lunch, or trendy locals that want to treat themselves.
The name literally means “The Grocery Store”. You can buy prepared meals or other items like sauces, cool looking bottled water, to go or of course sit down and order. It’s one of those restaurants where you wish they gave you bigger portions because you love the food so much. Out of the zillions of meals that I’ve had in my life, I can still taste their “club sandwich” desert. They score 5 on 5 for creativity with this one…..picture a club sandwich where the bread tastes like chocolate and the fries are actually fried pineapple. The whole thing looks like a club sandwich from far but it’s a great dessert. Not a super cheap restaurant, but worth treating yourself if you want to get a feel for Old Montreal.

Creative Chocolate Club Sandwich
I really wanted to be awed by this place because I have heard such a buzz about it. The venue itself is beautiful – a traditional grocery store that still feels sexy! Staff were polite, however they brought out my main meal about two minutes after I placed the order, forgetting my starter. They apologized profusely and I asked to still try the beetroot carpaccio, arugula, and goat cheese with balsamic reduction – delightful! My pear and pine nut salad was great but quite salty, and the curry pork tenderloin with caramelized onions was fabulous. I could not resist ordering the unique Chocolate Club Sandwich off the dessert menu (printed on a paper bag!) Very unique presentation with 2 generous pieces of chocolate and custard layer cake pierced with a toothpick, with a side order of pineapple fries and a melon and mint coleslaw; excellent with a strong Illy coffee. I was happy with my visit to Chez L’Épicier but I was not awed by it. I would recommend the restaurant for its location, atmosphere and creative theme. I also think it is also a good place to by gifts for the foodies in your life!
