Cote Soleil / Raviolution

Montreal | $$ | Website

Côté Soleil/Raviolution, a tandem joint specializing in both breakfast and dinner, is located on St. Denis street in Montreal’s trendy plateau area. It is just south of the famous “bring your own wine” restaurant street, Duluth. Unfortunately for Côté Soleil/Raviolution, it is not a bring your own wine, which is possibly why at 8:00pm on a Friday night, the restaurant was empty.

Tucked away, this small restaurant has a cozy atmosphere with brick walls, white wooden tables and chairs, and a nice chandelier hanging over the small bar. The front and rear terraces are extremely popular in warmer weather. Service is very friendly and polite.

The dinner menu (Raviolution) has every intention of impressing but, sadly, can be a bit hit or miss depending on the night. On one occasion, the starter of smoked salmon ravioli with cream sauce and dill was good but very al dente, the calamari was chewy but the goat cheese was delicious; a special paella ($17.95) was tasty but there was no chorizo in it as advertised; the pasta with sundried tomato pesto and goats cheese was standard but the duck ravioli with duck confit was very tasty ($16). A complimentary digestive of Limoncello was a nice finish to the experience, overall.

Weekend breakfast/brunch at Côté Soleil is where this place excels. Portion sizes are generous and the coffee refills and fruit are plentiful. Apricot crepes ($7.95) are a real treat but you may never have the opportunity to try them with all of the other delicious items on the menu, like the eggs benedict with spinach ($10. 95).

Stick to the Breakfast. It's Great!

Côté Soleil/ Raviolution is a great place for breakfast but I don’t think that I will be visiting for dinner again. I think that Côté Soleil/ Raviolution’s biggest downfall is their location. The plateau is a great place to be but they are too close to all of the “bring your own wine” restaurants to draw a dinner crowd. I think they would have much more success if they changed to a BYOW. I like going to restaurants that are busy because of the energy of conversation – something that is slightly lacking when you are the only table in the place. However, I love the popular weekend breakfasts. Huge portions and there is a definite buzz over bottomless cups of coffee. Staff are great!
