DNA Restaurant

Old Montreal | $$$$ | Website

The complicity between chef Derek Dammann and maître d’hôtel Alex Cruz is what makes DNA one of the best restaurants in Montreal. The synergy extends to fine wines and fantastic food along with tantalizing interior design, great service, good times, accommodating staff and a savvy clientele. These elements combine to create an experience that is greater than the sum of its parts.

We ate heart, testies, tongue and porks blood

My brother treated us out for dinner on my birthday this past week and I finally had a chance to try DNA. As you walk in you’ll notice that to the right is a pretty cool, open concept….almost looks like people are eating in an Apple store….lots of clear glass, silver, very cool looking. We didn’t have any reservations so we sat on the left side of the restaurant which is very lounge like. Lots of orange, a fireplace, very relaxed.

We had a young and bubbly waitress, she was very nice. Turns out they had a table d’hote menu only, $45 / person which included 4 courses. As we looked at the menu we all looked up at each other, we didn’t understand ¾ of the options lol We ended trying I believe it was cattle brain….something’s heart, tongue, a testicle (I couldn’t help but to giggle as our waitress said the word) and finally pork’s blood in our chocolate desert.

I kinda liked the fact that we could try all these new things but I’m not sure if I would want to put myself through that many times. I began to look around as dinner wrapped up and noticed that the live, I guess Jazz band?, ended and lounge music was now playing. I went to the washroom which was also very nice but was surprised to see a NBA sized basketball net to throw your hand towel in??? It seemed so out of place.

Overall my take on DNA is this. The interior design is cool but the music went from classy to house…the basketball net in the bathroom is totally out of place. I get the feeling that DNA wants to be a high end sports lounge + restaurant. The menu was a little too far out in left field but I do applaud them for trying new things. Maybe a few more simple options would have been good. Service was great….Mom didn’t like a dish so our waitress kindly offered her a free glass of wine which I thought was nice.

Will I go back, probably, but the vibe I got when I left was that DNA is still trying to find its true identity….(did that sound cheesy, or even make sense? lol)

5-7 Special!

This is a favorite 5-7 happy hour spot for our office because of the 50% off bottles of wine special. The wine list is extensive and the knowledgeable staff is quick to suggest something if you are unsure.
The salty, almost 2-feet long breadsticks are a treat! I still have yet to eat a meal here but the bar/lounge side is excellent.
