Gibby's
Old Montreal | $$$$$ | Website
The entrance archway to Gibbys stands on what was once the south bank of the Little St. Pierre River near the original Huron settlement of Hochelaga. Visits to the site by the early explorers, Jacques Cartier in 1535, and Champlain in 1611, led to the first permanent settlement by de Maisonneuve in 1641.
The Little St. Pierre River was covered over in 1833 to allow the construction of St. Anne’s Market, now Place Youville. This building was later remodeled to serve as the Parliament buildings of the newly united Province of Canada in 1844. In 1849 an angry mob burned the Parliament to the ground in response to some unpopular legislation.
Gibbys is located in the Youville Stables which is part of a series of buildings once belonging to the Sisters of Charity, (or Grey Nuns), founded by Marguerite d’Youville. Part of the original structure was built in 1694, and served as The Grey Nuns’ General Hospital, which cared for the sick and destitute. However, most of the building dates from 1765 to 1850.
Youville Stables received its name from the horses’ stalls which were once located in the central courtyard. This part of the structure dates back to 1740 and was renovated in 1967, the first in a series of renovations in Old Montreal. The buildings now house the restaurant and private offices.

Old Montreals famous steak house
Everyone has heard of Gibby’s in Old Montreal. It’s the type of restaurant your Dad introduces you to when you’re old enough to appreciate a good steak. I love the fact that Gibby’s is in an old building, the stone walls really add to the atmosphere.
It’s an expensive restaurant and the food didn’t blow me away. Would I come back for a steak, prob not, there’s much better in Montreal. But would I come back and bring a guest from out of the city….ya, probably, just so they can see a little of Old Montreal. On the plus side the service was quick and efficient and they can all pretty much speak English (don’t be shy if you’re a tourist).
Lots of history, always busy, older crowd, a restaurant to try once….

The Real Deal
I’ve been here several times and have never been disappointed. It’s the best place to have steak in Montreal without question. I love the bread and pickles that they serve right off the bat and I’m a huge fan of the Gibby’s salad, which is totally amazing. It’s so cool when they serve you a small scoop of lemon granita after the salad to cleanse the palate – impressive. Plus, I really like the old pewter tableware that they have there and it reminds me of when I was a child and would have Christmas supper at my Grandmother’s house. They really know how to keep a good tradition alive.
Most importantly, the service at this place is the best I have ever experience in Montreal.

Nostalgia
I am a fan of Gibby’s. It was one of the first “fancy” restaurants my parents took my sister and I too when we were kids. I’m talking like 25 years ago. The food may not be spectacular, but it is very good, if not a little overpriced. The atmosphere is excellent, with the old building and servers who have seemingly worked there since the turn of the century (the 20th century).
Gibby’s hasn’t changed much since I first went there in the 1980s, and I suspect long before then. Back then it was the place to be, but with all of the new restaurants and what seems to be a food revolution in Montreal, it is probably a little behind the times.
But it will always have a special place in my heart and will remain one of my “go to” places in Montreal.
PS If you find Gibby’s to be a bit pricey (which it definitely is), go for lunch. They have a good lunch menu and its far more reasonable.
