Hard Rock Cafe

Montreal | $$ | Map | Website

Some say “If you have seen one, you have seen them all”. Maybe that is the case with the Montreal location of the international chain restaurant, The Hard Rock Café. Known for its classic American fare and Rock & Roll paraphernalia, many tourists keep it on their must do hit list. Loud music blares while MTV videos play on TV screens, and the walls are covered in records, posters and framed albums or signed photos. Montreal is home to Mick Jagger’s white rolled-up-sleeve coat, Elvis’s aviator suit, Sir Elton John’s Napoleon costume and Gun & Rose’s drum set among other vintage rock leftovers. Even the food screams Rock & Roll with large portions of greasy grub that has a southern BBQ style, big on chicken, ribs and burgers. The appetizer Jumbo Combo for $19.99 gets you a sampling of the best appetizers that is great for sharing: potato skins, onion rings, Mexican style spring rolls, chicken tenders and wings with all the dipping sauces.

For the wandering die-hard fan that like at a rock-concert, comes here to by the t-shirt, the Montreal Hard Rock Café will not disappoint. A great location in the centre of Crescent Street action is a great spot to hang out with friends or feast on large portions of not-good-for-you-but-tasty-food.

Buy the T-Shirt and Move On

The set-up, decor, and paraphernalia as well as the store are all I would recommend you check out at this particular Hard Rock. I’ve been to this particular one several times, but will never go again after my latest experience.

While the service was friendly and the waiter we had was fluently bilingual (sometimes an issue if you are an out-of-towner), nothing could make up for the fact that the food we ordered was sub-par at best.

We had a nacho entree and I went with a rib and chicken combo while my wife opted for a parmigiana style southwest chicken sandwich. My chicken was well-cooked, and probably the better of the two main aspects of my meal. The ribs were well, bad, and less than half of the ‘‘meat’‘ on them was edible. I usually don’t mind a bit of grisly fatty goodness on my ribs, but these took it to a whole other level. For the price (around 18$), I was expecting a lot better.

My wife had the sandwich described above, and got what amounted to a rubber chicken with a sloppy tomato sauce and some spice splashed on top. She ate a couple bites, we complained, and ended up getting 1/2 off our meal. Pretty fair considering we ate about half of our meals, if not less.

We didn’t ask for anything in return after having complained, but I got the feeling it wasn’t the first time they were comping meals and/or bills to save face because of poor product.

Rarely am I compelled to complain – and I almost didn’t here. If you want my advice, stop in for the T-Shirt like Monica says, have a beer, and MAYBE the Nachos..and then move on.

Visit for the souvenirs...Save the appetite for elsewhere

We left having satisfied our craving but also with the feeling of a “rock” in our stomachs. The $7.90 Sinful Hot Fudge Sundae was a letdown. A $2 chocolate sundae at McDonalds has more hot fudge!
With so many exciting restaurants to choose from in Montreal, I can’t understand why anyone would waste their appetites at a chain. Maybe for some people, knowing what they will get is appealing. My advice is to take a chance on other Montreal restaurants and only visit the Hard Rock to have a beer with some appetizers, or just buy the T-shirt and say “been there, done that!”
