Charity is the origin of the friendship between businessmen Jeff Dichter and restaurateur Lenny Lighter. Jeff Dichter was on the corporate committee of the Montreal Children’s Hospital Foundation when he met Lenny Lighter. They put together the “7” charity dinner (featuring seven courses prepared by seven chefs), a $5,000-a-plate event held at Moishe’s owned by Lenny and his brother Larry. The event raised $500,000 for the Montreal Children’s Hospital Foundation in 2005. They knew they wanted to work together again. Jeff and his long-time partner, Steve Belitzky, having sold their manufacturing business, were looking for a new adventure. Lenny and Larry were ready to branch out. Larry, Lenny’s brother and partner, assumed greater responsibility at Moishe’s and freed up some time for Lenny. A new partnership was formed.
They then turned their attention to another possible venue for fundraising: a burger bar. A percentage of all restaurant sales would be donated to Montreal children’s charities, including the Montreal Children’s Hospital Foundation and the Foundation for Research into Children’s Diseases.
Jeff developed and then Jeff and Lenny redeveloped, refined, changed, redefined, redeveloped, and re-changed concepts and plans for the new venture. They went on several tasting trips – New York, Las Vegas and anywhere they tracked down a rumor of great burgers and sides. Every burger joint in Montreal was sampled. They knew they could do better. Capital was raised from a brave group of supporters and m:brgr was born. m:brgr served its first brgr on January 12, 2008.

The hunt for the best burger continues...
Every week I do my best to try new places and it was time to taste m:brgr. Paul and I showed up just past 7 on a Weds night and the place was packed which I took as a good sign. There were a few babes here which threw me off, I thought eating burgers was more of a ….I’m wearing my lulu jogging pants and I may have forgotten to put deodorant on before stepping out in my running shoes….. kinda thing to do. Clearly m:brgr was different.
I decided to order the most expensive option, the $19.75 Kobe beef burger (price ranges for burgers are roughly $8.75 to $19.75) and dress it up with extra options like cheddar cheese, pickles, and a tomato. Paul and split the sweet potato fries….(trying to stay in shape). As we were chatting I looked around, checked out the lighting, the hot blond working behind the bar and watched the waiters work their magic. Our guy was good; he repeatedly filled up our glasses of water which to me is a sign that they’re paying attention. I like my beers, but I need water.
I awaited with much anticipation, kinda the same feeling you get just before making love….you’re excited, the blood is flowing, you know it’s going down any second now and you start sweating (what, you don’t sweat?). The burger came and I was surprised, not in a good way. I mean here I am looking at this burger and the first thing I see is a plain bun that I know sells at IGA for like $0.10….maybe I was expecting freshly baked buns? The meat was soft, the cheese was so melted that I wasn’t sure if there was cheese in it.
So I guess the term “blue balls” would be the best way to describe my first m:brgr experience. My suggestion, take it for what it’s worth…..if you’re going to specialize in something like the best burgers in Montreal, go all the way. Don’t buy plain, grocery store buns, bake your own or import them….good bread is half the burger. The atmosphere is great, the service is great, the meat was tasty and you were so close to being amazing but came a bit short on the details. My hunt for the perfect burger continues….

So we decided to take my aunt out for her birthday here at M:brgr. This is my second time at the resto, and first time I think I ordered the Tuna Asiatic Salad, but can’t really remember. As you can see the taste left a lasting impression…not.
We ordered Mac & Cheese as an appetizer…it was nice and creamy, basically a heart attack waiting to happen. As my main dish I ordered the tuna burger with plain bread, cheddar cheese, portobello mushrooms, tomatoes and lettuce. For some reason, I was expecting a piece of seared tuna but instead my burger consisted of a tuna patty which somehow disintegrated into a paper thin fish flavored specimen upon biting into it. So the burger was enhhhh…nothing special. I’ve had much better burgers in Montreal and cheaper….burger king? Ok no, just joking but I was serious about tasting better burgers in Montreal.
The dessert is a completely different topic. We ordered the chocolate chip cookie which comes out on a mini-frying pan, garnished with 2 big scoops of vanilla icecream. The cookie is to die for as the hot raw texture combined with the melting ice cream harmoniously melt in your mouth!!!
The service was absolutely excellent….the waitress was constantly checking up on us.
Worth checking out for atmosphere, good service and great desserts but don’t get your hopes up on the burgers!

m:brger is mmmmmouthwatering goodness!!!
This is a fantastic burger joint, if not THE burger joint of Montreal. Quebec is famous for their steamed hot dog restaurants (casse-croutes), but a good burger has always been hard to find…until now! m:brgr is a delightully decorated restaurant located in the heart of Montreal. The friendly and quick service make for a more than enjoyable experience with mouthwatering dishes! I personally prefer to stick to the burgers, but for the vegetarians there is a delicious dish of macaroni and cheese that I am told is unbeatable!
