Olive & Gourmando

Old Montreal | $$ | Website

This Old Montreal eatery is both cheap and delicious – no wonder it is always so busy! Beginning as a bakery, Olive & Gourmando added some tables to become a pint-sized café and the rest is history. It still serves some of the most perfect bread in Montreal, but the real fun here is its inspired menu of sandwiches (try the smoked trout or chicken and mango), soups and tasty baked sweets. Everything served is funky and fresh, just like its young Quebecois staff.

Best of all, everything at Olive et Gourmando can be ordered to take out – a delight especially in summertime when the area's green spaces offer scenic picnic areas.

A Great walk in off the streets of Old Montreal

I have been to Olive Gourmando a few times now. It was highly recommended by a few local friends of mine living in the area. I didn’t go in with high expectations, but left with a very great taste in my mouth.

This trendy little cafe has everything that you need. There are no menus, only a blackboard of a few choices, the chips they bring out are kettled and very crunchy!…which is my personal favorite.
The service is very Paris french and you feel like you are eating in a small village, rather than Montreal. Stop by for a sandwich and one of those great desserts!

A taste of la vraie Montreal!

This is one of my favourite spots in Montreal – one of those places that I’d take anyone visiting from out of town for a taste, literally and otherwise, of la vraie Montreal. I’ve tasted many of the sandwiches here (try the grain-fed chicken) and the baked goodies, of course! A word to the wise: definitely share the super-indulgent butterscotch pecan square with a friend. Though this place can get really busy, you’re never more than 10 minutes between hunger and tasty satisfaction.

Addictive!

I work in an office with 20 women that is located diagonally across from Olive and it is absolutely a hot lunch spot for us. We ooohhh and aaaahhh daily about the freshly made vegetarian soups, fried bread, sandwiches, and of course the coffee. It is expensive but so worth it when you are in the mood for a great lunch. Absolute must tries are the vegetarian chili with cornbread and the chocolate banana brioche – it’s HUGE and melts in your mouth! We often pick up croissants, brownies, lemon squares and my favorite – butter pecan squares for a mid-afternoon office indulgement! Olive is a real treat and we miss it when it is closed on Monday’s – forcing us to find our coffee elsewhere.
