Pintxo

Pintxo is a popular Spanish restaurant with a lot of good reviews but most are probably not due to their location. Tucked away at 256 Roy East, in a residential area about 3 blocks away from the hustle and bustle of St. Denis street, you may miss this small restaurant when passing by it. Once inside, the fireplace is glowing warm and large beautiful original paintings hang on the walls.
Without any paella in sight, the menu is separated into two sections; Pintxo and main dishes. “Pintxo” is not tapas but a little taste of bite-sized eats from the Basque region of Spain, which, as the waitress suggests, can serve as a full meal when five to six choices are ordered or as a prelude to a main course of duck, fish, rack of lamb or even chorizo with blood pudding. The Menu Dégustation is good value; for $30 you will have four Pintxo’s of the chef’s choice and a main dish of your own choosing. The Strawberry and Sweet Bell Pepper Gazpacho served in a shot glass was a great start along with the Foie Gras Torchon with Onion Confit. The Salmon Tartar was smoky and the Roasted Vegetables with Balsamic Reduction were average. The berry coulis served with the main of sliced duck breast served rare on a bed of risotto was an interesting pairing. The risotto was rich and creamy but the duck was so rare that it was tough to cut and chewy.
Like its menu, Pintxo Restaurant is simple and small, presenting Spanish haute cuisine in a cozy and inviting environment.

Cute little tapas restaurant
A few of us tried Pintxo last night and overall we gave it a thumbs up! They have roughly 20+ tapas to choose from but I want to warn you right now, the portions are small. Don’t let this scare you because if you order 4 – 6 tapas which tend to be very rich in flavor you’ll be full.
I usually eat a lot so I payed it safe and ordered a main course, the filet mignon. I’m going to say it right now but this was perhaps the best “value” filet mignon I’ve seen in Montreal so far! Yes, for $22 I had a perfectly cooked medium well filet de boeuf as they call it, served with mashed potatoes and asparagus. Combine this with 2 tapas and I was left stretching my legs at the end of the meal.
Pintxo is a small restaurant which gives it that intimate feeling but when it’s a full house, I found it a bit loud and tough to hear our conversations. Towards the end of the night it cleared out and I was much more relaxed :) Great service, meals came out quickly, I will definitely head back to Pintxo at some point!

It's the Little Things That Count
This restaurant is appealing to me because it is tough to find, making it seem like a secret hideaway. I think that Pintxo’s small size makes it intimate and romantic. It felt like I was invited into a friend’s home for a dinner party. I was ultimately disappointed with the duck breast. Next time I will stick to the Pintxo’s which is what Pintxo Restaurant does best.
