St. Viateur Bagel

Montreal | $ | Website

Since 1957, St-Viateur Bagel has been a central part of the culture and daily life of Montreal. Its legendary landmark bagel shop operates 24/7 and sells over 1,000 dozen bagels a day.

St-Viateur Bagel was founded by Myer Lewkowicz who brought his, now famous, recipe from Eastern Europe. The art of bagel making means hand rolling each one and baking them in a wood-burning oven. The current owner, Joe Morena, with over 45 years of experience in the bagel business, ensures that the traditions at the St-Viateur Bagel continue to be respected. Over half a century, this family business has grown to include 4 bakeries and 2 Bagel Cafés in Montreal.

Hot Out of the Wood Burning Oven

Another local mecca in Montreal, St. Viateur Bagels is forever imprinted in my childhood memories – picking up fresh hot bagels and eating them in the car while my mother is running her errands where not to long after she scolds me for getting sesame and poppy seeds all over the car seat. And of course, after a big night of partying, picking up fresh bagels at 4 am and choosing from their variety of Cream Cheese spreads is also a Montreal tradition!

I know this may sound bizarre, but I love eating my bagels half raw, so I would wait for a new batch to hit the oven and have them take a couple out early. Of course I would get a few weird glances, but I didn’t care…it’s sooooooo worth it! Try it sometime.
