Just for Laughs

Montreal | $ | Website

Once a year, Montreal gets together to laugh out loud. The renowned Just for Laughs festival, which hits the city every July, showcases the world's top comics for ten days of galas, intimate stand-up shows and outdoor presentations. If you're lucky, you might catch a future world star getting his start on stage at Just for Laughs – many have, from Jim Carrey to Howie Mendel – or a Hollywood a-lister doing some unscripted gags.

Every year at the Just for Laughs seems to get bigger and better, and 2008 was a truly banner edition, with appearances by Seth Rogen, Russell Brand and the rest of the Judd Apatow gang, the casts of South Park and Family Guy, plus hilarious randoms like Craig Ferguson and Kathy Griffin.

Nasty Girls!

Make sure to buy your tickets for Nasty Girls! After its successful first edition last year, they are coming back for 3 shows this year! It’s the same concept as the original Nasty Show, but the mic is handed over to the ladies! The tables are reversed and the women enjoy a good laugh at mens expense! I went last year with some girlfriends, shared some laughs and was ready to go out on the town after with amazing fierceness!

See a gala or the Nasty Show

Montreal is a festival city and Just for Laughs is one of the year’s top events. I’ve been to a few shows at the fest, and am rarely disappointed. The galas are great, since you usually get to say a semi-big name as host – often someone who’s not your typical comedian – plus enough acts to ensure at least a few LOL moments. The dirtiest, most politically incorrect shows like the “Nasty Show” usually get the best reviews, but those book up really fast. I found the free outdoor stuff that the fest offers to be mostly tame (good for kids, I guess) compared to the hilarity that happens indoors. Just book your tickets early!
